USO Received $10,000 donation from Urquhart

Aug 23rd, 2010 by David Anderson

USO Receives $10,000 donation from Urquhart.
The Annual Brian Brown Memorial Golf Challenge received a welcomed boost. Businessman and former Reagan appointee Glen Urquhart gave a personal check of $10,000 to support the USO’s efforts to maintain the morale of America’s military service members.
“It is not often the USO receives a donation of $10,000”, said a delighted Joan Cote, director of the Delaware USO. The US Delaware offers many worthy programs as diverse as the highly praised United through Reading program to providing support for our fallen military heroes who have given the ultimate sacrifice. She praised Urquhart’s generosity and commitment to the cause.
For Businessman Glen Urquhart, the focus was on the true American heroes. Our military service members show by their example that sacrifice is essential to liberty, their sacrifice has secured our liberty, Urquhart noted. It is a privilege to recognize those who sacrifice so much as well as their families. Let the focus be on them and their example, which is calling us to give more and demand less, said Urquhart.
Glen Urquhart is also a candidate for the Republican Nomination for Delaware’s lone Congressional seat.

“Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men.

Good word, there is a lot that he does that you don’t know about.

My understanding is that the USO suggested making this a big check event because they wanted the publicity to help them with more large donations. The LORD also said sit in the place of lower honor and let people call you forward. If they honor, you it is okay. If you make them honor you, that is okay but you have your reward from men. You don’t need another from GOD.

  3. on 23 Aug 2010 at 06:333The Other Geezer

My fat counterpart Geezer hates veterans and their service but I am glad Glen appreciates it.
How can liberals care about their country when they hate their service members?

  4. on 23 Aug 2010 at 06:574Windjammer

A very good cause. Urquhart considers just one more installment payment on his congressional seat.

  5. on 23 Aug 2010 at 08:035fightingbluehen

Nice oversized check. Way to toot your own horn Glenn. You usually only see those oversized checks when commercial sponsors are looking for recognition. You stay classy Glenn Urquhart.

  6. on 23 Aug 2010 at 08:086Rick

Ten grand is ten grand, chump. A man makes a charitable gift, and some people denigrate his generosity.

    Pathetic losers.

  7. on 23 Aug 2010 at 08:157Windjammer

Nice name calling Rick. I thought David’s recent posting would stop the name calling, at least for a while.

  8. on 23 Aug 2010 at 08:258think123

“How can liberals care about their country when they hate their service members?”

That kind of comment is not politics, that’s mental illness.

  9. on 23 Aug 2010 at 08:429fightingbluehen

Rick: It’s not the “generosity” it’s the showboating, and ten grand to him is like ten bucks for most people.
Yes ten grand is ten grand, but do you really think he did this out of generosity ? Maybe he did this to compensate for the bad press he knew he would receive regarding the building, and alleged mismanagement of the Korean War Memorial. ( Check out “Delaware Republican Record.” ).

  10. on 23 Aug 2010 at 08:5110alpha

Looks like the Penguin presenting a check to Gotham City.

Unlike you, I don’t profess to be able to read minds.

    Nice name calling Rick.…Wj

Okay, Mr. Double-Standard. Didn’t you post this nasty comment?-

“Urquhart considers just one more installment payment on his congressional seat.”

You are clearly intimating that there was no charity in his contribution, that it was a purely political calculation.

And upon what do you base this statement? You don’t like Urquhart.

Maybe you should change your handle to ‘holier-than-thou.’

  12. on 23 Aug 2010 at 09:1212Michael P. Borgia

    Three cheers for Glen.

If he were primarily interested in a campaign downpayment, there are far more effective ways he could be spending his money.

  13. on 23 Aug 2010 at 09:5313fightingbluehen

“Unlike you, I don’t profess to be able to read minds.”
I don’t either Rick, but the fact that he made an event out of it leaves one wondering. If I were handling Urquhart, I would have had him write the check with no fan fare. Eventually someone would mention it , and his generosity would seem more sincere.

  14. on 23 Aug 2010 at 13:0014GeorgeC

Good for Glenn, the USO is an awesome organization. Always nice to have somewhere to go while waiting at the airport, and the tours for the people in country are awesome. I’m sure Glen is happy he’ll get good publicity from this, but I have no doubt that he is sincere in his gift. More publicity for the USO is a good thing, it isn’t talked about the way it used to be and that is sad because it and a couple other organizations really do a great job. Some of you may wish he just wrote the check and that was it, but his donation wasn’t just money. Politicians can bring publicity to an issue(or in this case an organization), and they have the ability to reach numerous supporters with news about a charitable organization through the same communication channels they set up for their campaign.

Bottom line, this is a good thing for the USO and Delaware’s service members.

David you’ve probably already done this, but have you thought about sending out an email about this to Glen’s list to bring attention to his supporters about the importance of the USO? I know Glen has a big base in Sussex County and the people down there have always been great to me when they found out I was in the military. The reaction from people at the State Fair was pretty humbling. A 10,000 dollar donation could be worth a lot more than that with a simple e-mail. Just sayin’

    Rick
Yes I did post that comment, however that is not name calling, it is stating a fact. I am certain that you are intelligent enough to know the difference.

  16. on 23 Aug 2010 at 14:2016Mark H

“I am certain that you are intelligent enough to know the difference.”

I’m not certain about that statement at all :)

I fondly remember the USO in San Diego, where I was stationed for 2 years. Although I didn’t stop there often, when I first got there, it was a great place to spend some time until I found my way around the city. The other neat thing (and this is when long distance phone calls where EXPENSIVE) is they let you call home for free around the Holidays. And if you were stuck in San Diego around the Holidays, it was a nice place to go to celebrate them.

    Rick
“Yes I did post that comment, however that is not name calling, it is stating a fact. I am certain that you are intelligent enough to know the difference.”…Windjammerer

    Here is what you said:

Urquhart considers just one more installment payment on his congressional seat.

I am ‘intelligent’ enough to know one thing- your hypothesis is not a fact. Why? Because you have absolutely no way of knowing his motivation. No, it’s not technically name-calling; merely a snide inference.

  18. on 23 Aug 2010 at 14:3918Windjammer

    Mark H
I was in the Navy for seven years and the USO is a great organization. I visited their facilities and attended their performances.
My comment was, “Urquhart considers it just one more installment payment on his congressional seat.”
I was accused of name calling and being holier-than-thou.
I was stating a fact as I see it, there was no name calling involved here. I believe I am right on this one.

  19. on 23 Aug 2010 at 15:1619Windjammer

Urquhart deserves the snide indifference. I did not call him a name
However, I will support the republican candidate for congress after the primary is over on Sept. 14, as I’ve already told David.
All republicans should vote for the winner of the primary to stave off a Carney victory. He may not be my candidate of choice but he would certainly be better than having Carney as our congressman.

  20. on 23 Aug 2010 at 15:2320Rick

    Ah ha…

    I was stating a fact as I see it…

Oh, I see- a ‘fact’ as you ‘see it.’ Thanks for the clarification.

However, that doesn’t make it a fact. Surely you’re intelligent enough to see that.

  21. on 23 Aug 2010 at 15:3821The Other Geezer

Yes , Liberals hate their service members. Remember, General Betrayus? The Bush General who is rescuing Obama as we speak.

  22. on 23 Aug 2010 at 17:4022Mike Matthews

What a calculated stunt. Geez this is ridiculous.

  23. on 23 Aug 2010 at 17:4823Mark H

“Yes , Liberals hate their service members”

Wow then I must hate myself then.

  24. on 23 Aug 2010 at 17:5324Windjammer

I don’t know Mark, do you hate yourself? You’re intelligent enough to know that.

  25. on 23 Aug 2010 at 18:5825meatball

I must be a self hating liberal veteran as well. It cracks me up to see so many organizations “supporting the troops” (not talking about the USO, that’s their mandate). I get so many offers for free and reduced stuff because I was stupid, unemployed and risked my life nearly 20 years ago?

  26. on 23 Aug 2010 at 21:5526anon4

So some group somewhere mocks General Patraeous and that gives you the right so say liberals hate U.S. service members? Mental illness dude. Turn off the talk radio, get back to being an American. According to you and candidate Urquhart we should ask “liberals” why they are Nazis who hate our service members. Did you ever stop and think you are talking about friends and neighbors family members. Calling people who don’t think like you liberal Nazis who hate our military? Sick. Or did we take that out of context? Get some help. Talk to your pastor.

  27. on 23 Aug 2010 at 22:2827David Anderson

I think most people were on target. I am intrigued by the few critics who have no such criticism of giving tax money away in some check ceremony. He didn’t even give foundation money like Rollins did in her ceremonial gift to an educational institution. He wrote a personal check. He gave out his personal funds. It illustrates what he talks about in charity. He gave more in one donation than Biden is used to in 10 years.

How do the few even criticize him? Don’t give him credit even though the USO wanted him there just like the Operation Any Soldier wanted him to give the award at the Blue Rocks game because of his dedication to charitable giving supporting the troops including that charity. He did not ask for the honor. It was bestowed upon him. Leadership is about setting examples. Sometimes that is by quiet living and sometimes it is by getting in front and leading.

I hope this brings attention to the fact that the USO is there doing good and needs our support.

  28. on 24 Aug 2010 at 00:1928GeorgeC

I think people saying liberals hate the troops are going wayyyyy overboard, but they have been more than happy to use us as nothing more than a political bargaining chip in Congress and it is getting embarrassing. Pelosi should be ashamed of herself.
