The Year of the Republican Woman?

Jul 30th, 2010 by David Anderson

Oklahoma will have its first lady as governor. Republican Congresswoman Mary Fallin is leading big in the race for the statehouse over Lt. Gov. Jari Askins. It was only the fourth time in American history both major parties selected women to head a state ticket. Both had competitive primaries. New Mexico will not be undone, Diane Denish, a Democrat and New Mexico’s first woman lieutenant governor, and Susana Martinez, a Republican Doña Ana County’s district attorney, are waging all-out battles for the state’s top post. Mrs. Martinez like Marco Rubio (FL Senate) could add a couple of high powered Latino(a)s to the GOP hierarchy. California and South Carolina have Republican women heading their tickets as well. In Georgia, a Republican lady, Secretary of State Karen Handel and Nathan Deal are in a run off. She led him by 10 points in the regular primary.  This is duplicated in other races from U. S. Senate to state representative.  Mama is getting ready to fix the mess because that is what mothers do.

What is interesting is the influence of Governor Sarah Palin. In most of these races, California being the exception where she put her energy behind Republican Woman Carly Fiorna in the Senate race, she backed the winner. There is no “queen bee” syndrome with Governor Palin. She backs quality candidates regardless of ethnicity or gender. Her successor in Alaska, Governor Sean Parnell is cruising to his own election victory. Her departure in Alaska was timed for maximum strength for the party to have a successor since she had no intention of running for reelection. I am still not convinced it was the best move for her, but one can not deny she is a wiley force for the party.

Governor Palin’s critics try to say she is dumb or worse. If they really believe that, they are going to be shocked when they say President Palin one day. People who underestimate her, lose to her. That year whenever it will be, will be the ultimate year of the Republican Woman.

Governor Palin is adding ethnic and gender diversity to the party. She is building a party for the future. I have long admired the political mind and abilities of Governor Palin as one of the charter members of the draft Palin for VP movement. She seems to have exceeded even my lofty view of her long term strategic abilities. The establishment of the GOP didn’t buy her. Instead of ingratiating herself to it, she just went out and created an entirely new branch of the establishment. One which is conservative, energetic, and diverse.

You may not have not noticed, but your candidate has been utterly destroyed by the other Republican blog.

I guess you give it a day or two and start talking about how great Mike Castle is…right?

  2. on 30 Jul 2010 at 09:152Apo Whichiapi

I hate to point out the obvious BUT…she is NOT Governor Palin.. FORMER Governor Palin would be more correct.

Critical of her, sure, but she simply waits to see who the front runner is then steps in with the endorsement and support – of course her PAC fund has not delivered monies to an extent that they could to good candidates – too busy buying lovely, well framed ads about “Momma Grizzlies”. Yup, there where some Momma Grizzilies in those adds alright! all remarkedly homogeneous from where I sat.

Too bad no minority women were portrayed…as far as adding ethnic diversity – where did you see that?? certainly NOT in her last self-aggradizing portrayal…..

Sarah Palin is a celebrity – don’t fall too deeply in love with the idol on the pedestal – coz when the base crumbles , the staute will fall and fall hard

And don’t even go into the Hispanic thing – you know nothing about it and would have to consult Noel anyway. so here’s a free lesson – By nature and tradition, they would be natural Republicans, hard-working, deeply traditional, deeply rooted in religiomand family values and socially conservative – However. the GOP has across the board, alienated them with this whole immigration thing – and alignment with the racist elements of the Tea Party – the GOP threw out the Baby with the Bath water in this major demographic.

Can you find a Hispanic Republican running for office – sure I can can show you a dancing chicken too

  3. on 30 Jul 2010 at 09:243David Anderson

A lot of Latinos are Republicans and many more are independent minded voters for the reasons that you stated. I agree that Republicans can not let rightful concern about illegal immigration morph in appearance or reality into nativism. They are natural allies of the party.

As for the former Governor, in politics you refer to a person by the highest office they obtained. The post noted within itself that she no longer held office. The designation of former would not be a title but an adjective to explain that she no longer held the office. Readers of this blog already know that and those who somehow missed it figured it out in the first paragraph that mentioned her turning the office over to Parnell. This is not a flyer or something without that context.

  4. on 30 Jul 2010 at 09:464Rick

I hate to point out the obvious BUT…she is NOT Governor Palin.. FORMER Governor Palin would be more correct.

I hate to point out that all former officials are addressed by their former titles. For example, when doing television interviews, it’s always “President Clinton, Senator Allen, Governor Wilder, Mayor Guiliani…”

Sarah Palin is a celebrity….when the base crumbles , the staute will fall and fall hard.

Don’t look for her ‘base’ to crumble any time soon….it’s growing as BO’s is shrinking.

  5. on 30 Jul 2010 at 10:205GeorgeC

She has grown a base within the conservative realm. I don’t think she has grown a base that can sustain a national majority. Her candidates will win primaries in Republican strongholds, but she isn’t going to put many Republicans in seats that are hotly contested. Heck she pretty much turned the Nevada race from a slam dunk for us to a hotly contested race.

Personally I don’t think she is all that intelligent, or substance based. I see a lot of fluff without much to back it up. But people buy it.

  6. on 30 Jul 2010 at 10:486Apo Whichiapi

ok ok ok – you removed the post…All I wantd to know is if you lost the “o” – so then tell me……

whatsa “Latin” I thought they went out with the Roman Empire…….

  7. on 30 Jul 2010 at 11:087David Anderson

I do also want to remind you that Sarah Palin seems to endorse the person who is trailing more often than not then they win not the other way around. Fiorina, Hailey, Handel, Angle (which I hated that one–we had two stronger candidates), Rubio were all trailing. Martinez had a fight and so did McCain. Palin is not picking winners and jumping on the bandwagon. Say whatever else you like.

As for the o or not read the post. It is hard enough to type from a remote devise when responding. Insults are not taking up the page. At least the latter seemed more appropriate.

  8. on 30 Jul 2010 at 12:558Rick

Personally I don’t think she is all that intelligent, or substance based. I see a lot of fluff without much to back it up.

Since when do you need intelligence or substance to succeed in politics? I mean, look who’s in the White House…a professional agitator/panhandler (‘community organizer’).

It wouldn’t matter if Palin or other female conservatives were the Einsteins of the political world. It’s their views that make them hated.

To be conservative is to be seen by most leftists as automatically mentally defective.

Or, if one writes and speaks intelligently, one is seen as “pseudo-intellectual.”

Either way, the conservative woman can’t win.

BTW, about the diversity: I thought Nikki Haley’s background was Indian?

  11. on 30 Jul 2010 at 13:5211David Anderson

Yes she is. I didn’t mention that because I covered it before. Thanks. Furthermore, she has a Sikh background religiously and was born again. “In Nikki’s words: ‘My faith in Christ has a profound impact on my daily life and I look to Him for guidance with every decision I make. God has blessed my family in so many ways and my faith in the Lord gives me great strength on a daily basis. Being a Christian is not about words, but about living for Christ every day.’”

  12. on 30 Jul 2010 at 13:5712jason330

“To be conservative is to be seen by most leftists as automatically mentally defective.”

    I can’t imagine why.

  13. on 30 Jul 2010 at 14:0113FVoshell

And, my friend David, you’ve brought up another reason Palin, Haley and other conservative women are hated: Many conservative women are deeply religious (and pro-life). There is nothing that starts the far left foaming at the mouth more than a heart felt profession of faith in Christ.

In fact, such a profession is regarded as a sign of profound stupidity, as religion is regarded as irrational and a crutch.

  14. on 30 Jul 2010 at 14:0914alpha

A really meaningful profession of faith in Christ would have been a vote to extend unemployment benefits.

  15. on 30 Jul 2010 at 14:1415jason330

Wingnuts are great at telling people they love Christ. When it comes to showing people they love Christ….not so good.

Odd that the Bible puts the emphasis on showing, not telling. it must have been one of those things the Bible got wrong, like being kind, and forgiving.

  16. on 30 Jul 2010 at 14:2116FVoshell

    Alpha,

I always like it when a fellow Christian theologian joins political discussions. :-)

It would be great to hear your theological reasons for combining extension of unemployment benefits with faith in Christ.

“Keepeth the shirt on your back, for thou deservest it more. And besides if thou removest thy shirt thou might be gay. If thou hast two shirts, keep the second one too, for thou may need it later, and shirts do not grow on trees.”

    lol. St. Alpha.

  19. on 30 Jul 2010 at 14:4419FVoshell

The kindest and most forgiving man who ever walked the face of this benighted planet had some very harsh and confrontational words for the established political institutions and hierarchies of his day. He once called King Herod the equivalent of (hmmmm…this is a family site) a “female dog.”

Try reading the four gospels in order to flesh out your understanding of what it means to be a follower of Christ.

Yes, he was kind and forgiving, offering his life for all; AND he detested evil with all his being.

    Gotta go. Vacation starts now….

    Best,

    Fay

“Some sins are so great I dare not speak their name. Yet I say unto you, the sins of which I do not speak are the most important ones, and thou shalt build thy laws around them. Woe unto he who does… umm… that thing. Or the other thing – you know what I mean. ”

    - From the Book of Justifications

  21. on 30 Jul 2010 at 14:5021David Anderson

I will miss you Fay. Enjoy.

But no thanks for starting a theological debate and then jetting. :)

  22. on 30 Jul 2010 at 14:5322David Anderson

2 years of unemployment compensation has already been granted because the economy is a mess that neither party seems to know how to fix. Due to the economy, go ahead and extend it, but take it out of unused stimulus money. It is not Christian to make us all debt slaves and deplete capital that will actually create jobs. We need to focus on job creation.

Wingnuts are great at telling people they love Christ. When it comes to showing people they love Christ….not so good.

    Uh huh. So says,

    1) A guy who has had everything handed to him in life,
    2) A guy who blogs with a guy who wanted to round up shoot all Republicans,
    3) A guy who belongs to a class — well to-do liberals — which donates the least to charity of any group.

  24. on 30 Jul 2010 at 17:3424apo wichiapi

Wingnuts are great at telling people they love Christ. When it comes to showing people they love Christ….not so good.

well Hube – I happen to agree: this coming from

1 someone who hand NOTHING handed to them- and had every DISadvantage, not advantages
2.worked hard and put their life on the line for this country and its people.
    3. donates time and money to charities, heavily
    4. would rather hang out with an honest Muslim or Buddist than a “Sunday Morning Christian”
    5. and HORRORS – you probably think Im a liberal too…but – well-to do – definately….

  25. on 30 Jul 2010 at 19:1525Hube

So? It changes nothing of what I wrote previously now, does it?

  26. on 30 Jul 2010 at 19:2426apo wichiapi

changes everything – you ever put your life on the line for this country??

you don’t know the first thing about me – thought you could use some education – but you missed the point now didn’t you….

so, to clarify – I do tend to be liberal in some areas, very conservative in other – and I donte heavily to charities – Kinda hard to tar all folks with the same brush

but some of you feel that a label – lliberal, progressive is a bad thing

maybe its like “yankee doddle” eventually it will be a badge of honor

conservative is not a bad thing either – too bad some folks have tried to make it look that way

  27. on 30 Jul 2010 at 19:5327Hube

No, it doesn’t. Because if you actually READ what I wrote, I wasn’t addressing you. Was I?

As for “serving your country,” it sure is easy to make that claim under a pseudonym now, ain’t it? Please.

  28. on 30 Jul 2010 at 20:4128Rick

A really meaningful profession of faith in Christ would have been a vote to extend unemployment benefits.

What about teaching a man to fish?

Quit your phony proselytizing, little leftie. You don’t fool anyone, and you’re not cute.

  29. on 30 Jul 2010 at 20:5129alpha

What about teaching a man to fish?

Chinese proverb – not Jesus. Jesus gave the fish away for free.

I see your knowledge of religion is just as bad as your knowledge of economics.

  30. on 30 Jul 2010 at 20:5730Rick

Again, what about teaching a man to fish?

Many of the unemployed wait for a job that will never appear again. Paying him to sit there waiting is a waste of time and money.

    You lose again, leftie.

  31. on 30 Jul 2010 at 21:0131alpha

The people who killed their jobs and now have their money can damn well pay for them to sit there waiting.

  32. on 02 Aug 2010 at 09:0132Rick

The people who killed their jobs and now have their money can damn well pay for them to sit there waiting.

I didn’t ‘kill’ their jobs- why should I (or any other taxpayer) ‘pay?’
