The blind commenting on the primary race
Aug 25th, 2010 by David Anderson
Harry Thermal, self imagined legal expert and columnist for the News Journal criticized the signs of Glen Urquhart and Velda Jones Potter (Potter-Jones for Emily List types) as being possibly illegal because they are involved in a primary and do not say what party they are in. The law of course makes no mention of dictating the content of the signs so the argument is specious. Even more entertaining is the 4 X 8 signs for Urquhart all have Republican for Congress in huge letters. Not only was his theory wrong, but apparently he is blind as well.
I do find it interesting that truly illegal sign activity by the Rollins team such as putting the signs up in July almost a month before the legal window and her placements on Rt. 1 escaped his notice. I really hope he gets his eyes checked before his next column.

This is one time I agree with you. It’s way past time for Harry Themal and Ron Williams both to retire. When a column largely consists of a game of spot-the-sign during a drive through the neighborhood, it’s over, fellas.
That said, David, I started seeing Urquhart signs up down here in Sussex at the start of the summer. Ditto for Eric Bodenweiser, Joe Booth and Alma Roach – from both sides of the aisle. So don’t throw stones, Mr. Glass House.
Clarification: The time limit aplies to signs placed in the public right-of-way not those on private property.
Exactly, you can have as many out as you can get whenever you want if they are on private property.
Many of the larger Urquhart signs do in fact say “Republican For Congress.”
Michele Rollin’s 4x8s have no disclaimer on them and are clearly illegal…
I always thought that the incessant whining from newspaper types about campaign signs was a reflection of the fact that politicians are spending money there and not at newspaper advertising desk.
One can bet that if Rollins or Urquhart spent $10,000 on full page ads in the News Journal and there was no mention of party, no one would have a complaint.
LOL, I agree.
BLT, the disclaimer is in the law, but is unenforceable due to court rulings. It is silly anyway. Not to defend Ms. Rollins, but I was only picking on her because she is in the same race. It just illustrates where the editorial page of the journal is. The news department is okay, but the editorial page is interesting. At least they are fair enough to allow people to write in and rebut them so I have no complaints. I just have a right to point out the obvious.
In the New Castle County debate with Urquhart the other night, when asked if she’d move to repeal Obamacare, she replied ‘in a heartbeat,’ but when asked the same question by WGMD’s Bill Colley at the Millsboro Fire Hall, she started her convouluted response with an emphatic ‘No.’
Which is it?
David, that applies to Delaware offices, but FEC regulations require it in all Federal campaigns.
The U. S. Supreme Court ruled otherwise so the FEC can blow smoke. It’s on our signs, but I am saying it is an unenforceable regulation. Feel free to complain to the FEC if you like. It is no sweat off my back. It is Michele with one l Rollins for Congress. Seriously though, how can you be sure it is not in 8 point type somewhere on the sign? Her campaign has bigger problems than sign disclaimers in fact the whole country has real problems which seem to escape Mr. Thermal.
Rick she is a born again conservative. She looked at her poll numbers and saw the light like John McCain did. Unlike John McCain, I bet it is way to late. You can contradict yourself from 2 years ago and say you learned. When you contradict yourself from two weeks ago, you are just a joke.
So does Urquhart still think Jefferson is a Nazi? Just saying. David are you even a credible source anymore, after being put on the Urquhart payroll? Maybe Carney will have a spot for you, after the Urquharters destroy any small hope of a Republican winning! Nice job.
This is why 89% of the Republican Party leadership knows and is preparing for Urquhart to win.
Who is the dope running Wagner’s race? Nothing on him yet?
Anyway, Themal and wRONg are hacks of the worst ilk.
Not to mention the illegally placed O’Donnell signs in the ROW or the illegal campaign workers on her campaign. http://delawarerepublicanrecord.wordpress.com/2010/08/25/christine-odonnell-birds-of-a-feather/
Glen Urquhart’s SEXIST RADIO AD:
A radio ad currently running on WGMD downstate attacks Michele Rollins for her age and waning looks. Michele Rollins is a former beauty queen. She is an older woman now. In the Urquhart ad there is a character who represents Rollins. That character says, “I used to be a fox, but now I’m not…a fox.”
This is blatant sexism. The type of semi-veiled attack that would never be directed at a man. If this is the kind of campaign Glen Urquhart is going to run, I’d say he’s already lost.
wRONg Williams needs to GO.
“Hi, I’m Michelle Rollins, and I run a business…
….now, I want to give you the business..”
