Examples Of Conservatism Part I »

TAX the BOOBS!!!

Nov 23rd, 2009 by Tennessee Walker

Yes, I know there may be some confusion about the title of this thread.  One would only wish that the Democrats would tax, JUST THE BOOBS.  In that event Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi would be in serious trouble.

No, this is the latest scheme by the Democrats to  find some villian to pay for the bloated unworkable Socialist Obama Care Plan .

The newest Democrat “Health Care” scheme in the Harry Reid Senate Bill is a 5% surtax on elective plastic surgery.  Let’s be clear at the outset that this type of surgery is not currently covered on most Health Insurance Policies.  I don’t believe it would be covered under Obama Care but I am always ready to be surprised.  For the most part individuals pay for this type of surgery out of pocket (oddly enough since plastic surgery tends to be more sensitive to consumer concerns, the price rises in overall health care costs have not been mirrored in plastic surgery)

Now, I have discussed this with many and the typical first response is Great!!! Let’s make some money off of the Hollywood Boob jobs done on actresses!!!! Let’s triple tax Pamela Anderson!!!!!!

The sad truth is that there just aren’t enough Hollywood Liberal types to actually make this type of tax worthwhile and the reality is a 5% surcharge to entertainers may not give us any money whatsoever.

You see the Hollywood crowd can already deduct this type of elective plastic surgery from their income on their tax returns.  Depending on the enforcement mechanism, (e.g. the tax is collected thru the surgeon) the extra 5% could be just an additional part of the deduction for the Pamela Anderson’s of the world.  Entertainers and this includes news types such as Barbara Walters and Great Van Sustern, who have admitted to getting a little help, believe that this type of surgery is necessary for career enhancement and the IRS agrees.  I won’t argue with either as they have had more success in this business than I have.

Now I might consider some benefit to this provision if it were made retroactive to Joe Biden’s hair plugs and Nancy Pelosi’s omnipresent smirk but sadly hese guys will get a free ride on this.

More important, the real money, the money Obama wants, is going to come from everyday citizens.  Over the last 5 years, Tummy Tucks have increased by 61%.  They typically go to average women who have given birth to  children and would now like to wear a 2 piece bathing suit.   It may not be a big deal to me but it is a big deal to these women and there are a lot of them.  From this group alone Obama will get about an extra $250 to $400 per case.

Individuals who have had significant acne scarring from teen years can get surgery to the tune of about $8,000.  Again these are ordinary people saving money from their own weekly paychecks  are now going to be punished with an additional Obama tax.    Let’s not forget some of the facial birth mark folks who are helped by dermabrasion procedures.  Those folks who have had to endure taunts since childhood really need to pay more according to Obama and his Liberal Democratl allies.

Obama and the Liberal Democrats are banking on the idea that this will not rise the ire of individual Americans.  They are probably correct.  The Liberals will attempt to frame this as a tax on attempting to improve your appearance and then not worthy of discussion.

I have a different take.

What business is it of the Federal Government how I spend the money I have honestly earned myself!!!

Again this is surgery paid for by the patient, not the insurance company, or any government agency.  If I, or anyone else, are to be taxed extra for finding ways to improve my apprearance let me suggest to Obama and his Socialist Minions some other targets that will really bring in some significant money.

1.  10% Surcharge on expensive men’s suits and women’s gowns and suits. Let’s have Joe Biden get taxed for the  $2,000+ Italian suits he buys.

2. 5% Surcharge on all Gym memberships and diet plans.  These have as their goal a cosmetic improvement after all.  If we are going to improve appearance let’s go all the way.

3.  5% Surcharge on gastric surgery with the intent of weight loss.  Heck, they improve people’s appearances.

4. 10% Surcharge on all cosmetic sales.  The logic of this is undeniable.  We are going to tax cosmetic surgery, why not tax all cosmetics!!!!!!! This will give Obama tons more money than just taxing an occasional Pamela Anderson.  A surcharge on cosmetics is the holy grail of Liberals.  It gets more money for them to spend on redistributing the wealth and it penalizes women who want to look good.  The Feminists will love this!!!!!!

Remember folks, in the end Liberals use the basic logic of taxing a small group in order to tax everyone.  One may think that taxing the boobs is just one small group that one can tax without recourse.  Anyone who thinks that forgets that Liberals/Socialists like Obama see ALL OF US AS BOOBS.

I think it is wrong to single out for special taxation things which improve the artistry of our world.

T.W. , I appreciate the light hearted approach you took on this topic, but one very serious effect this may have, is on women who have breast reconstruction after having a radical mastectomy. Would these women be taxed also for their plastic surgery ? It is still elective and cosmetic .

  3. on 23 Nov 2009 at 20:123Tennessee Walker

Frank I don’t think that the reconstructive surgery would be taxed under this legislation. I may be wrong but most of this type of reconstructive surgery is covered under most existing plans and is not considered “elective”. I am more than willing to hear some other views from those who have specific expertise in this area.

Yes, I took a light hearted tone on this. However, I consider the examples I gave such as the individual who had to deal with birth marks or scarring acne to be in the same vein as one who has to get reconstructive breast surgery. In the end for all of these folks, why is it the government’s business if they want to have the surgery when they are paying the freight???

What world do you live in where only Hollywood types and people who only “really need” help get cosmetic surgery? Most people I know have had a nip here and a tuck there, and don’t even get me started on Botox and laser treatments. Cosmetic surgery is all the rage… for almost everyone. And, no, it’s none of your business if Pandora has partaken in such endeavors!

Kidding Pandora, though it would be cool to see our friendly nemisis.

Pandora did you actually read what I posted???? I said that some folks I talked to were ok with this due to the Hollywood connection.

I AM NOT OK WITH THIS !!! I pointed out the case of the women, none of them starlets, who would be penalized by Obama for Tummy Tucks. I believe this is a retrograde tax on working people who have to deal with the public. I do hope that Pandora and other real women will oppose this surcharge. The amount that will be added to the tax rolls are negligible but way to wide ranging to be accepted by all of us.
Again as I said earlier, if we are going to tax cosmetic surgery, lets tax everything that improves appearance. That includes Men’s clothing, hair styling, and women’s clothing, hair styling, and cosmetics.

Don’t worry tho, because the governments universal healthcare plan is going to attack the boobs starting in school anyway:

Well I hope this motivates you Cookie to get out there and fight Obama Care.

    And to paraphrase your quote.

“I guess we had better get that boob Obama a new job soon!:)”
