After President Barack Obama’s unenlightened crack on the Tonight Show about his bowling game being “like Special Olympics or something,” and the President’s subsequent apology, Special Olympian bowlers have released a statement:

After we learned of the President’s gaffe, and later of his heartfelt apology, we felt the need to offer the President an apology of our own.

Up until this point, when one of our fellow Special Olympians bowled a horrifically bad game, we would tease them by saying “You’re bowling like you’re the President of the United States or something.” We deeply regret our insensitivity.

I think this is where you kick my dog – the one I don’t have. Before you read my comment, though, I do like your satire.

This is from a comment I left on our friends’ blog earlier this morning:

…any attack on Obama’s seriously brain-dead comment last night is a shallow point to make. What he did was dumb, but in my mind fueled by a brain-dead moment. Just like his predecessors, most, if not all, comments on that same level are fleeting moments of not thinking it through and saying something that in no way reflects the character of the person. What it reflects is the years-upon-years of conditioning people of our age have had of knee-jerk comments smashing up against way over-zealous PC police.

For all the things people can debate on / argue over, this gaffe is a waste of energy and effort. Except for satire. Satire is good.
