Update: Sussex Council is off until November 30.
A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING SUSSEX COUNTY COUNCIL’S CONCERN THAT A PROPOSED INCREASE IN THE FEDERAL FUEL TAX WOULD BE HARMFUL TO THE CITIZENS OF SUSSEX COUNTY, DELAWARE, AND THE COUNTY’S OVERALL ECONOMIC HEALTH
WHEREAS, there is a proposal to increase by 25 cents the federal fuel tax, at a time when gasoline prices are nearing $3 a gallon; and
WHEREAS, such a proposal to increase the federal fuel tax could have a detrimental, wide-reaching effect on households and industry alike; and
WHEREAS, a fuel tax increase of 25 cents a gallon would cost the average Sussex County household more than $700 annually; and
WHEREAS, a high number of Sussex County residents are already unemployed or unable to find full-time work, while the national unemployment rate is at the highest sustained rate since the Great Depression; and
WHEREAS, a gasoline tax is particularly burdensome to lower- and lower-middle income citizens in non-urban areas, where there are few public transportation options available; and
WHEREAS, a fuel tax increase could threaten not just household budgets, but Sussex County’s overall economy, especially the agriculture and tourism industries; and
WHEREAS, the agriculture industry is adversely affected by higher fuel prices in all aspects, from production to transportation of goods; and
WHEREAS, the County’s tourism industry relies heavily on regional visitors whose discretionary spending could be curtailed by a significant rise in fuel prices; and
WHEREAS, increases in fuel taxes are passed on to consumers, affecting the price of most goods and services, thereby affecting the overall health and stability of our economy;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE RESOLVED that the Sussex County Council hereby urges the Delaware Congressional Delegation to withdraw its support for any form of a significant fuel tax, be it the proposed 25-cent gasoline tax increase, ‘cap and trade’, or a ‘carbon tax’. The County Administrator shall send an official copy of this resolution, upon its adoption, to each member of the Delaware Congressional Delegation for their consideration.
Come out and support this next week!! Thanks Vance for giving the people an opportunity to speak up.

Thank you Vance for standing up for the citizens of Delaware. Let’s hope that that Delaware’s federal delegation do the right thing — for the people of Delaware.
[...] leave a comment » I’m told that the following resolution, which responds to a proposal (supported by Senator Carper) to raise the federal gasoline tax by twenty-five cents per gallon, will be considered by the Sussex County Council next week. First posted on DelawarePolitics.net. [...]
A tax gas is a good and patriotic thing. I am serious. Look, taxes are inevitable to some extent. All we can ask is that they be fair and simple. A flat income tax would be such a tax. And a gas tax is as well. I don’t know why Republicans feel they must oppose this. A gas tax would put a dent in gas-guzzling behavior, as has already been seen in the dramatic drop in the sale of sport-utility vehicles. And it would help cure oil dependency in the long run, as automakers and other manufacturers respond to consumer demand for fuel-efficient products.
I should clarify my last post by saying that I don’t know why SOME Republicans feel they must oppose increasing this tax. I am a Republican and certainly do not oppose it. Increasing this tax (and cuttting others) would be a great move for this country.

Job well done Sussex County Council.
It’s is a great statement to make to the Governor and General Assembly that we don’t approve of their tax and spend attitude.
WHEREAS the Socialist-Democrat contingent doesn’t give a damn what you think….
And we don’t give a damn what you think Rick the drunk.
Gas taxes must not be raised for two important reasons.
First, because the price of gas is already skyrocketing. It has climbed 50 cents per gallon in just three months when it should be falling due to seasonal demand. Sticking on another 25 cents per gallon is just wrong. If anything, we need to be discussing a gas tax holiday until the current runup in prices ends…if it ever does.
Second, because gas taxes…like most “sin taxes” disproportionately hurt the poor. But when taxes become excessive, we can quit smoking or drinking. But like it or not, our lives run on gasoline. The rich don’t have to choose between putting gas in the car or food on the table. Jacking the gas tax and increasing the price of fuel by another 25 cents per gallon brings that choice closer to reality for the poor. That’s wrong. Republicans are right to oppose it.
Grandstanding……
And we don’t give a damn what you think Rick the drunk.… Real American Chickens#!t
Who is ‘we,’ you pathetic piece of slime?
