Regional Political Round UP VA-Governor’s race heats up
Sep 18th, 2009 by David Anderson
Virginia– Deeds is a never say die politician who received an unforced assist by former Senator George Allen as detailed two weeks ago. The race for Governor between Republican AG McDonnell and Democrat state senator Deeds is now very tight. McDonnell still has a 7 point lead among people who made up their minds but leaners are now breaking to Deeds giving McDonnell only a small advantage. I will bring you the polls after Thursday’s debate take effect.
New Jersey This state has tightened as well, but it is not as tight as expected. Republican Chris Christie seems to be settling in on a solid 8 point lead now that he is able to counter the media assault on him with some ads.
Delaware Delaware had an important special election which was won by Republican Ruth Briggs King filling the 37th Representative seat. Taxpayers were skittish about giving the Democrats a super majority especially in this conservative leaning district. Call it buyers remorse.
New York The governor signed an email, web surfing, text messaging while driving ban. It applies to laptops as well as cell phones so don’t try a technicality.
My scandal spotlight this week shines on its Congressional Delegation. Not wanting to be an Uncle Tom (joke about Governor Patterson’s remark that people who criticize him and other black politicians are racists), I will just link to the Charlie Rangel news story. Evil racist Republicans (trying to be pc) are questioning the pure intentioned Rangel about his lack of disclosure of a half a million dollars of assets. It seems like less of a problem got Republican Senator Ted Stevens convicted and tossed out in his reelection bid (though the conviction was overturned on appeal). I never figured out why Democrats insist on all of these bureaucratic good government laws if they don’t apply them to their own. It is almost like laws are for other people.
Governor Pataki may become Senator Pataki. The lastest poll shows a swing in his favor from July. The GOP tide is even touching Blue New York.
New York City had its primaries Tuesday. City Comptroller Bill Thompson will be the Democrat sacrifice for mayor. A Democrat also filled a Democrat seat in the 38th special election for state assembly.
Maryland Montgomery County may be ruing the day it went Democrat. Property tax increases are on the table again. The County Executive says the county is living beyond its means so he proposes to cut spending? No, he proposes to raise taxes. What is even more entertaining to outsiders is that he holds a $25,000 senior management retreat to get ideas about efficiency. When a reporter asks his spokesman what taxpayers got for the retreat. He was dismissed with “”Are you really asking me that question?”. After all out of a 4.4 billion dollar budget why ask about 25K, he wondered?
Silver Springs Maryland has royalty in its midst. A secretary is now moonlighting as the monarch of Ghana for her second job. I guess the Black Empowerment guys were right in the 70′s when they said we were kings and queens. Who knew? To be serious, congratulations to her Royal Highness Peggielene Bartels. If you want some economic advise, email Depolitics@gmail.com and we will hook you up Ma’am. Ghana is actually quite a stable and prosperous democracy and a beautiful land.
Pennsylvania Table games have overcome long odds to be an out of the blue gamble for resolving the budget impasse. If it passes this would be another set back for Delaware Governor Markell’s gaming strategy.
Ridge is definitely out in the Senate race. I am sure his sniping at Bush regarding homeland security did not help his chances with the GOP primary voters.
The Governor is optimistic that a budget may finally be reached. The remaining problem is that the Democrats cant figure out where to get their extra $300,000,000 in education spending without increasing revenues. They don’t want to cut more spending. Attention has turned to table games.
“Moderate” Senator Bob Casey Jr. defended his undying support of ACORN in a losing battle.

“City Comptroller Bill Thompson will be the Democrat sacrifice for mayor”
is there a Republican in the race?
I think there was equal trepidation about bringing gambling to Sussex in this outcome. I wonder if Pete led Rob down the garden lane because Pete has been promised a job at DelPointe as goes the scuttlebutt?
As always a great, great job here Dave.
Did y’all hear about the harness track might be coming right up the road from me on Route 9?
Also I am now on the reader board of the Sussex Countian. My suggestion? I came up with this great idea. Get a female to pose as a prostitute and a guy to pose as a pimp. Go around to ACORN in Georgetown (just don’t ask the Robinson fellow where it’s at cause he dunno) and inquire about getting a house for running the business.
Well I thought it was a great idea.
Senator Bob Casey is in essence making the same argument as mine on here in defense of ACORN, not excusing for a second the few bad apples, but recognizing the good work the other members have done over the years.
