President Obama Too Busy To Honor Tradition

This is from a Washington post article:  “In a highly unusual move, President Barack Obama is going to skip the traditional Memorial Day event at Arlington National Cemetery to return home to Chicago for the long holiday weekend. Obama sees it as addressing one of the great broken promises of his administration: his early pledge to return home to Chicago every six weeks or so, according to The Washington Post. On Monday, Obama will make remarks at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery and miss the usual tradition of presidents speaking at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day. Instead, Vice President Biden and his wife will appear in Obama’s place, laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as well as holding a breakfast for Gold Star families — families whose loved ones died in military service — at the White House earlier that day. ”   Can someone explain how a sitting president can miss this time-honored tradition? And the best excuse he comes up with is that he made a promise to go home every six weeks or so. And he chooses this weekend? I’m sorry, but in my view this is highly disrespectful of those who have given the full measure of sacrifice.

  1. I have no problem being consistant, I do not understand why short of illness, why “ANY” President has to be somewhere else on this day. Arlington is a National symbol of the sacrifice our bravest citizens have made. Memorial Day has come to symbolize that sacrifice, as Commander In Chief, I think the President could schedule that one day around Arlington.
Sorry David, I guess you are guilty by association.

  2. For those of you that do not know me yet, I am a proud Desert Storm Marine. HOO RAH! Patrotism is my middle name. Now to comment on the subject at hand. Frank, you stated, ”
…I do not understand why short of illness, why “ANY” President has to be somewhere else on this day.” I think you need to expand on the subject. As I see it, there is no greater sacrifice than a Commander in Chief who sacrifices his own life to move an entire race out of bondage. I think it’s about time that we memorialized President Lincoln for liberating millions. I, a soldier, take no offense, why do you?

I suspect that you are a conservative that is grasping at any straw possible to demean President Obamas character. I find that offensive. Now, of course, in typical conservative fashion, I anticipate that you will….well we all know how you will respond.

  3. Frank-
In 2002, President George W. Bush commemorated Memorial Day at Normandy. I hope your as upset at him as you are Obama.

  4. Oh my, Google is so wonderful. It appears that the gold standard for conservatives, President Reagan attended a summit meeting in Williamsburg, Va. on Memorial Day in 1983 while Deputy Secretary of Defense W. Paul Thayer laid a wreath at Arlington Cemetery. In 1992, George H.W. Bush attended a ceremony in Kennebunkport, Maine (where he also reportedly played a round of golf) while VP Dan Quayle laid the wreath at Arlington.

I suspect you will have no comment now.

  5. I think this should be titled

  6. Perhaps Obama will have the time on Memorial Day, where ever he may be in Chicago, to find his heart with his right hand should he find himself within earshot of our National Anthem.

Just west of town, a short helecopter ride away, there are an inumerable number of cemeteries along the Des Plains River, where many thousands of our soldiers are buried. A quick visit there shouldn’t be too much to ask. (He could even stop at the Memorial to the Haymarket riots if he needs to…I’m sure he knows where it is.) After all, given the tepid response that he received at the Military Academy this week, you’d think he would do something…anything to make our men and women in uniform feel better about him as their Commander-in-Chief. And that, folks, is the whole point of many peoples’ anger with him; he doesn’t seem to care!

Frank at least run spell check on your title.

  8. Let me repeat, “I have no problem being consistant, I do not understand why short of illness, why “ANY” President has to be somewhere else on this day. Arlington is a National symbol of the sacrifice our bravest citizens have made. Memorial Day has come to symbolize that sacrifice, as Commander In Chief, I think the President could schedule that one day around Arlington.” This includes both parties.
And let me apologize for my frequent spelling errors and punctuation mis-steps. I unlike many of you do not work in front of a computer, I have to post in the time I have before and after work and around that pesky thing called life. I am still learning about the technology. But often I am in such a rush I forget spell check. But if all you have to criticize is my spelling then I guess that’s not that bad.I could tell you about the slight case of dyslexia I have but that would be whining.

  9. Why would a man who hates America honor veterans who fought to preserve our traditional way of life? Maybe he plans to lay a roach at the tomb of the unknown anarchist.

  10. Mark H. I think the point is for those of us who are not Veterans to honor those who are. To give thanks to them for all that they have done to protect us and the freedom we enjoy.

  11. During the 2008 campaign, Barry Jr. flippantly stated that our troops are out there just “air-raiding villages and killing civilians”…like an imbecile. Thus, is it any wonder why so many question his committment to our troops, when he says such stupid and blatantly dishonest things about them?
