Poles, Czechs: US missile defense shift a betrayal

Sep 18th, 2009 by Tennessee Walker

The careful cultivation of alliances with Eastern Europe that has so successfully developed democracies in parts of the world that had been enslaved by Communist dictatorships for over 50 years has been tossed aside like a used Kleenex by Barack Obama.

Here are the sad headlines from Czech and Polish news outlets.

“Betrayal!  The U.S. sold us to Russia and stabbed us in the back,”

“an ally we rely on has betrayed us, and exchanged us for its own, better relations with Russia, of which we are rightly afraid.”

“No Radar. Russia won,”

According to former UN ambassador John Bolton, “This was a signal of weakness. “

According to Polish President Lech Kacynski the Bush Administration plan, that Obama just tossed, would have been “a major step in preventing various disturbing trends in our region of the world,” his statement was in a guest editorial in the daily Fakt and also carried on his presidential Web site.

Too many of Obama’s followers believe that history began when Obama was born. The Polish and Czech view of history is much longer. They remember a time when neither nation existed and in the case of the Poles how their nation was dismembered and eliminated by Russian autocrats.

The experts in the Obama State Department were so stupid as to allow this announcement on the 70th anniversary of another back stabbing, this time by the Soviet Union when they invaded Eastern Poland on Sept. 17, 1939.

Obama should have skipped the diplomatic niceties and just gone ahead and slapped the Polish President in the face and saved his words for another day. This insult will not be forgotten by the Polish People or the numerous Polish Americans in this country.

The Solidarity movement in Poland was the beginning of the end for the Soviet evil empire. This brave nation and the Czech nation deserved better than the back of the hand from this president. Obama has spent his time running around the world apologizing to tyrants for everything under the sun. I know two apologies he needs to make real soon. I won’t hold my breath.

The quotes for the above with the exception of Bolton’s are from this AP article by Vanessa Gera

It is a sad day. The insult of doing it on the 70th anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Poland makes it even worse. Poland and the Czech Republic put troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. They are faithful allies, but the President had rather go around to those who won’t help us and please them.

Like Clinton there is some dysfunction there. It is the guy whose father is not there so he lives life trying to please someone who abuses that trust and overlooks the people who love and support him.

This is a minor issue in the long-term alliances we have with the Eastern European nations, not a permanent rupture. There will likely be benefits to the US in our relations with Russian and our dealings with Iran. We (you and I) don’t know yet what those will be. If it turns out we got nothing, we can always redeploy.

And - since when have you neocons been concerned about foreign headlines in the slightest?

  4. on 19 Sep 2009 at 08:584noman

    Well I’ll be darned:

MOSCOW – Russia will scrap a plan to deploy missiles near Poland because the U.S. no longer wants to place a missile-defense system in Eastern Europe, a Russian deputy defense minister said Saturday.

  5. on 19 Sep 2009 at 09:215Rick

What would you expect from a pantywaist Socialist-Democrat like BO? Remember, BO and his ilk (Ayres, Wright, et al), are unabashed admirers of dictators like Chavez, Castro and any Muslim head-case. Exacerbating the problem is the fact that now the Russians can now, and in the future, count on BO to take the usual ‘liberal’ course; utter capitulation.

This petty Marxist in the White House has got to go.

Thank God the grownups are in charge of diplomacy again.

When did the Obama admin. leave Washington, noman?

HA HA HA HA… (John Bolton…)

    And Hube.

You will be darned, Noman, since Russian deployment of SS-26 (NATO designation: Stone) road-mobile missiles to Kaliningrad would have been in violation of the Intermediate Nuclear Forces treaty.

Obama cancels Bush’s plans to deploy some new missile defense… Russia cancels plans to deploy some of its missiles (which it had announced in response to Bush’s plan). Both countries get to enjoy a small peace dividend. This is a win-win. It is responsible management of foreign relations.

Plus, there will now very likely be more Russian cooperation with respect to Iran.

It is through small steps like this that we will unwind the Bush disaster and begin to repair international relations.

  11. on 19 Sep 2009 at 11:1211noman

G Rex - your link does not prove what you say it does:

“the new SS-X-26 TEL has been designed with the INF Treaty in mind, with several external changes that clearly differentiate the two vehicles to prevent treaty compliance problems.”

Also, I don’t have time right now to research what treaties Bush may have violated (if any) by his proposed new missile defenses.

Most of you miss the real substance and the shaded intent of the decision.

We also agreed to transfer F16’s to Poland which in the end will do more for conventional defense-real substance.
We more or less caved in to the Russians who would oppose any UN sanctions against Iran-the shaded intent to get something for dropping our Eastern Eurpoean Allies,

Putin has played the US like a champ and Obama is a fool to think he has soldified anything good for America. The folks on the other side of the world know with Korea the same will happen-Obama will sell out and do nothing.

America just got shafted and we are seen as chumps.

noman: “Thank God the grownups are in charge of diplomacy again.”

  15. on 20 Sep 2009 at 07:3115Art Downs

“Grown ups” were in charge of diplomacy at Munich. Look how well that one turned out.

Diplomacy without the ability to project force and the will to employ it is merely a euphemism for surrender.

The weakness of will demonstrated by the Carter Administration over the Embassy outrage and the invasion of Afghanistan certainly showed a national ‘backbone of a banana’. Wimpy Cyrus Vance showed his nature when he resigned over the rescue attempt. He quit not because the effort failed but because it was attempted.

Art doesn’t recognize victory unless it goes Boom.

Art wants relations with Russia to be a never-ending string of Cuban Missile crises.

  17. on 20 Sep 2009 at 10:1717David Anderson

I can’t read someone else’s mind so I will speak for myself. Russia is a competitor not an enemy. That does not mean they are friends. We need to insure that we get something in return for our efforts. This was a golden opportunity to solve the problem with Iran by sidelining the Russian component. Iran would have been forced to the negotiating table if Russia dropped its backing. This made very little sense in the method that it was rolled out. They may be adults, but they showed that as a bunch of Senators they don’t know how to run a fruit stand let alone international diplomacy.

  18. on 20 Sep 2009 at 10:3118Rick

“..there will now very likely be more Russian cooperation with respect to Iran.”

Only a liberal could call a bitch-slap ‘cooperation.’

So sorry your beloved Bush-led nuclear arms race in Eastern Europe has been called off. Go get counselling.

  20. on 20 Sep 2009 at 12:5320Tennessee Walker

“So sorry your beloved Bush-led nuclear arms race in Eastern Europe has been called off. Go get counselling.”

There were No nuclear weapons to go into Poland or Czech Republic. A grand total of 10 missles were scheduled for Poland which is hardly a threat to the Russian ICBM arsenal. Go take a course in critical thinking and writing. Some facts might be more impressive then non sequitors.

  21. on 20 Sep 2009 at 15:1321noman

The Russians do not care about your fringe theories of critical thinking or your misunderstanding of their capabilities:

Iskander missiles are lightweight, high-precision, surface-to-surface rockets that can be launched quickly from mobile platforms and carry nuclear or conventional payloads.

  22. on 20 Sep 2009 at 15:3322Tennessee Walker

Are you saying Noman that we have committed to loading these missles with nuclear payloads??? Please give me your citation. Otherwise you are just another Propagandist as your friend Perry would say and you are just attempting to propagate another KGB lie. Hey but you really don’t think the KGB lies do you?

  23. on 21 Sep 2009 at 05:4023Art Downs

The systems that were to go to Poland and Czechoslovakia were purely defensive and presented no threat to anything on Russian territory.

Putin is a thug. Bush was foolish to believe that he could reason with him but not so foolish as to knuckle under his every demand.

We have yet to see Obama demonstrate anything other than cleverness or charm. Perhaps he is stupid enough to believe that the attributes that he used to seduce a majority of the electorate constitute the ability to charm the real monsters of the world.

  24. on 21 Sep 2009 at 12:1424Rick

BO has a new enemy- Americans who attend tea parties.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad- those are his new ‘friends.’

And trust me, they all recognize a pushover when they see one. BO is just another Carter. Hapless.

  25. on 24 Sep 2009 at 12:1125Akira

You people are clueless. I wonder how you can feed yourselves.

The missile “shield” was nothing but a threat against Russia on the phony pretext of an Iranian threat to New Jersey.

How can this be an “abandonment” of Eastern Europe to the evil Russians, when for years now the US has been insisting it has nothing to do with Russia, but is designed to defended from Iran!?

    Use your bloody brains!

Now the plan has (temporarily) shifted due to Netanyahu’s orders to Obama.

However, the assault against Russia will now shit to the Black Sea and renewed US support for Muslim terrorists in the Kavkaz.
