Mary Kane is a working Mom, a small business advocate, and an accomplished attorney who shares Bob Ehrlich’s unwavering commitment to public service.
As Special Projects Director for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Mary helps lead the Campaign for Free Enterprise, a multiyear project that inspires Americans to pursue their dreams through individual initiative, and the Chamber’s Military and Veteran’s Initiative, which encourages companies to employ U.S. veterans and their families as they transition back into the workforce. She also works on the Chamber’s Business Civic Leadership Center, which is designed to establish and maintain a positive role for businesses in society.
Mary previously served as an Assistant State’s Attorney for Montgomery County, where she saw firsthand the challenges facing children who grew up in troubled homes.
In August, 2005, Mary was named Secretary of State for Maryland, just the fourth woman in 167 years to be appointed to this office. As secretary of state, she led several legislative initiatives including reforms to the Maryland Solicitations Act and implementing the Maryland Safe at Home program for victims of domestic violence.
Mary is active in her community and currently serves on several boards, including Suburban Hospital, a member of the Johns Hopkins Healthcare system, The Community Foundation of Montgomery County, the Montgomery County Business Roundtable for Education, Montgomery Alliance and Easter Seals.
She graduated from Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and the Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C., where she was the commencement speaker for her class. She was Of Counsel to the law firm of Etheridge, Quinn, McAuliffe, Rowan and Hartinger located in Rockville, Maryland until she was appointed to serve as Deputy Secretary of State in March 2003.
She resides in Potomac, Maryland, with her husband, John, and their three children.
