A bit o’ old time politicking.
How does a no name, no money, third party candidate win a Statewide Federal election? Work, work and more work. I was asked very early on what I thought it would cost to win the U.S. Representative seat this year. My response was “hopefully not my marriage.” The guy I was talking to didn’t find that nearly as funny as I did in the 30 degree weather. But my honest response was “about 3 pair of shoes”. I feel that Delaware is unique that you can reach all the areas of the state in a day. Not that I could campaign everywhere in a day…man wouldn’t that be nice. But even without the media blasts you can reach people. I have what people want: An honest man with a pure message, and integrity. I don’t have 100 years or so of tradeoffs, corruption, backroom deals, side deals, or compromise that taints the others (parties that is). I offer the people of Delaware something they have not had in a very long time — A real difference.
I believe in the Constitution of the United States, as it was written. Not in the lawyer rhetoric twisting of words, stretching of meanings to squeeze every last drop of power from the word “it”. This document was drafted by men that wanted the “everyman” to understand it. So that we could serve each other in the Federal Government no matter your station in life. From Bill the farmer to Ed the shopkeeper, everyone could understand how the Federal Government was to run. In fact there was a 13th amendment to the constitution that was either not ratified or ratified and conveniently forgotten, that said no person with English title could serve in the US Congress. This, in essence, makes all lawyers ineligible for congressional service. Our founding fathers wanted this country to be run by ordinary citizens not a ruling elite.
So I cannot believe that you must spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to get a public service job that pays a hundred and twenty thousand a year. I believe the only way to change the status quo is to get un-ambitious people – Like me!- into office and have them introduce legislation to remove the congressional pension for one year of service, put in place term limits or limits on succession. Take the career path out of politics and we would see a return to everyman serving his or her community in Government.
With a bit of work, a lot of pressing the flesh, lots of shoe leather, and some good old honest conversation we can win this one for the People. When was the last time you did a job interview from the radio, a yard sign, or television? You don’t, you go meet with the people that are going to hire you. This is the same thing, I want to meet with my employers; I want them to see that I am the right man for the job. I want to go Represent the People of Delaware, imagine that, a Representative actually representing! So I am making the rounds and I will be doing a lot of walking in the months to come. It won’t be easy but I am dedicated and driven. I cannot, for my children’s sake, sit back and do nothing. I will make the finish line **wink – wink** win or lose I intend to give the People of Delaware a real choice.
