John McCain Please Wake UP
Aug 3rd, 2009 by David Anderson
Senator McCain who liked a Cap and Trade deal for carbon is opposing a 2 billion dollar rebate for “cash for clunkers”. Now this money is coming from reallocating the stimulus funds which is not working too well to a program which is working. What is the problem? Cash for clunkers is a conservative/libertarian idea. That is why the Democrats cut it in Conference committee. It values individual choice by encouraging people to do something good for themselves, the environment, and conserve energy. It saves money and creates jobs. In my opinion we need more of this type of legislation and less of the ham handed rationing like Jack Markell signed into law.
Senator McCain is a great man, but he is part of the crowd that does not understand that we need to reinvigorate our manufacturing base. People like Hamilton and Washington turned this country from an agricultural backwater into a vigorous diverse economy with agriculture, finance, and manufacturing because they understood the principles of prosperity. In some respects, I don’t mind how the election turned out. Now the people have a clear understanding of the radical left which rules the Democrats, and we have a chance to restore the Republican Party to Lincoln’s people’s party. He is not the only one. We have one commentator (Michelle Malkin) who is blasting the job creating cash for clunkers program, while she criticizes people who are living it up on unemployment. I guess the reason that tens of millions are not working is that they got lazy all at the same time. The people on unemployment are our voters. They work for a living, blasting them is not smart. Once in a while it can get a little discouraging listening to the public discourse. It is no wonder the party has lost two elections. The sad part is the Democrats are working their hardest to stop that trend. I don’t think the GOP needs to reform to gain in the next election. I think just say no would suffice. The other side is that bad. I think any reasonable program presented to the public in 2010 will make a lot of people yellow dog Republicans in much of the Nation.
If the Republican Party wants long term gains, it needs to promote the voices of the leaders who have the fresh ideas which tackle the nation’s problems. In the past the Republican Party was founded by those who understood the value of free markets, free soil, and free men. The Republican party was a party of Liberty and Prosperity. It had firm moral convictions and sound economic policy. That is a formula which will still work today. It is time for the GOP to go back to the future.

“Senator McCain is a great man, but he is part of the crowd that does not understand that we need to reinvigorate our manufacturing base. ”
David, Cash for Clunkers does reinvirfortate auto production. The program is shorter term ending November and mostly likey before as the money will run out.
How many more police can we hire for three billion dollars? What about protecting main street! How many auto plants in Delaware will reopen as a result of Cash for Clunkers?
I have to admit I am not a big fan of cash for clunkers either, or the way it is carried out. As much as I would love an extra rebate on my car the program does not seem to be practicle to me. At least not the way it is being run.
However, is Senator McCain still a Maverick who’s choices I just don’t get? Yup.
Your last paragraph is spot on though.
A friend of mine just emailed me one of your articles from a while back. I read that one a few more. Really enjoy your blog. Thanks
Hi there,
I looked over your blog and it looks really good. Do you ever do link exchanges on your blog roll? If you do, I’d like to exchange links with you.
Let me know if you’re interested.
Thanks..
I agree with complaints about its administration. It is lousy. That does not invalidate the idea. It is popular, timely, stimulative, environmentally responsible, and cost effective. It is why tax incentives are better than government spending. I much prefer it to government mandates, taxes, and regulation.
I don’t want the federal government controlling local police. That is one reason I was against the crime bill in 1994. The Constitution does not give the federal government responsibility for local policing. It does have the right to give tax rebates for good activity. I would like to see the program extended for 3 years and I would like to see the home ownership tax credit lengthened as well.
The Senator supported NAFTA, GATT, and permanent MFN for China. He supported Sarbanes Oxley. He did not support the buy American amendment in the stimulus bill. He criticized President Bush when then President Bush saved our steel industry from destruction because of Chinese currency manipulations. He supported sending manufacturing of our military planes overseas. Did I mentioned he co-sponsored Cap and Trade last year? I think when it comes to the economy, McCain has not been a friend of the working guy along with a lot of Democrats and Republicans who are all in the pocket of K Street. I don’t think it is willful, just misinformed. The problem is that the result of those polices have not been good. It is squeezing the middle class. No wonder a lot of people don’t trust Washington.
That is just my opinion.

Crushing perfectly good used cars is ‘conservative?’ Subsidizing people with $100k incomes is ‘conservative?’
Adding another component to the already partially nationalized auto industry is ‘conservative?’
For once, McCain is right.
