Is it time for Potential GOP frontrunners to step back in?
Sep 27th, 2009 by David Anderson
Blanche Lincoln has a 36% approval rating and polls 40 to 39% in a match up against Bruce Cotton who has single digit name recognition in the same poll. I almost wonder if it is time for Mike Huckabee to consider entering that race and dispatching her. His numbers in Arkansas are stratospheric and he would be a lock if he didn’t take it for granted. The problem is that he has contract obligations not only with Fox News but ABC radio (replacing Paul Harvey).
Still imagine if he used it to tout a shadow agenda. If he offered up alternative bills to each one proposed by the white house. It would electrify the country. He is one of only a few people with the clout to become the instant leader of the opposition.
Another one who could would be Mitt Romney. His numbers are still pretty good in Massachusetts though not a lock and there is a special election early next year. I think he should do a surprise run for the senate. He has nothing to lose if he doesn’t let them pull him into petty stuff or contradict his Presidential stands. If he wins, he becomes that instant leader we need. If he loses people say it is Massachusetts and we made him come out so conservatively in the Presidential race that he couldn’t win again there. If doesn’t hurt him. Unlike Huckabee he has no contract obligations of the same nature.
Governor Romney’s leadership would instantly bring sanity to the American debate. I think it is time that we ask him to step up and provide it. If he does, I think he will be our nominee in 2012.

Great Post Dave!!! Your imagination is on overdrive. I believe your views on what Romney and Huckabee are correct. I am sorry that I don’t think that either will take the dive. I think both could make a difference and benefit from a Senate Run.
David,
Good idea but for both of these guys they are looking at what does the most good for them in 2012. Serving in Congress does not do that while as part of the minority.
After Obama America will not be enthralled with a minimal record as a Senator.

They don’t have the Obama problem. They already have accomplishments. I would agree that severing in the minority and not doing anything would not serve them. Doing what I suggested would. That is bringing a team together and offering policies. Jesse Helms and Howard Metsenbaum did it to a tee. They showed what one senator can do with those rules. You can slow down anything you pick on by withholding unanimous consent. You can then take the floor and highlight why it is wrong. You then come up with popular amendments others would rather not vote on.
They refuse to consider your health care bill, make it substitute amendment or better yet an amendment right now to the water bill. It may fail but you all of a sudden let people rally behind a Republican plan and kills the entire argument that you may hate the Democrat plan but it is the only plan.
You develop or adopt bills for every major policy and form a shadow cabinet type arrangement. You have Dr. Coburn leading on health. You have another leading on energy. You have one lead on defense. You have another leading here and you stand up and back each one and cosponsor. Soon that person becomes the leader of the loyal opposition and people imagine almost a shadow government. By October of 2011, that person is the one people see as President and it becomes a contest between equals with two different visions.
I just hope McCain stays the hell out of the way. The Republicans need him like they need a gay sex scandal.
