Guest Post: Norman Wood Makes His Case unfiltered
Jul 14th, 2010 by David Anderson
NOTE FROM ME: This like all candidate posts is not an endorsement. I hate to leave the GOP reservation but I am currently open to considering who should receive my vote for sheriff. The image of the the same headline saying Sheriff pleads guilty to drunken driving and files for reelection is hard for me to swallow, but I have not closed the door on him. Mr. Wood asked me if he could introduce himself to our readership. Mr. Wood is a patriot who has served this country and our community so I will do that much for him. Ladies and gentlemen unedited and unfiltered:
NORMAN WOOD
For Kent County Sheriff
Born in Kent General Hospital in July, 1967, Norman Wood remains a lifelong resident of Kent County; never having moved outside of a 20-mile radius. In his early school years, Norman lived with his parents in the area of East Dover where he attended Towne Point Elementary and Central Middle School. He would then go on to graduate from Lake Forest High School in 1985 before deciding to enlist in the Delaware National Guard, where he proudly served for 6 Active Years and 3 Inactive Years. Being in the National Guard opened many doors of opportunity for Norman. He acquired the skills needed for working on heating and cooling equipment and while on a refrigeration job he met his next employer who owned a Plumbing business. He soon found himself working as a Plumber’s Assistant. Norman’s knack for picking up tasks quickly became evident.
While he enjoyed his plumbing job, Norman always knew he was destined for something different. He didn’t have to wait long to find out what that was, either. During a conversation, someone mentioned to him that he should become a police officer. Norman was intrigued. One phone call and an interview later and he found himself as the Smyrna Police Departments new Dispatcher. After working with the department for a few months, he realized that this could be the lifelong career
he was searching for. The Smyrna Police Department agreed to send him to the Delaware State Police Academy where he graduated and began his work as a Patrol Officer the very next day.
He is now a veteran of almost 19 years. He has worked his way through the ranks during his career, with his early start in Dispatching, then a series of promotions from Patrolman to Patrolman 1st Class, Corporal, Sergeant and now Lieutenant. Working with the citizens of Smyrna on a daily basis has strengthened his natural desire to continue in the direction of public service and has been an integral part of his wish to become Kent County’s new Sheriff. He has always enjoyed his job as a police officer because he has known great satisfaction in helping to serve the community in which he works.
Norman has a vision for the Kent County Sheriff’s Office that he hopes you will share with him. He wants to see the office brought current in technology by obtaining 800 MHz radios for each Deputy, thereby increasing officer safety and lessening their dependence on unreliable cell phones should the need arise in an emergency situation. He also believes in the very best training available for the Sheriff’s Deputies. He believes that they should have access to any training or equipment that will make their jobs safer and more time efficient. Higher efficiency and accuracy is needed more today than ever, considering the state of today’s economy. The office continues to get busier by the day and the staff should have the resources they need to get the job done.
If elected Sheriff, he will work toward accomplishing these goals that will help the Sheriff’s Office become a well respected, efficiently run service to all of Kent County. Norman currently resides in Camden-Wyoming with his wife Penny and their four male Boxer’s. His daughter, Whitney, of Magnolia, and her husband Josh, who is active Coast Guard, are expecting their first child in July and Norman is looking forward to the arrival of his first Grandson.
Note from Me: The views are those of the writer. As always a candidate submission is just that. Thank you, Mr. Wood for letting us get to know you.

I am curious, Why doesn’t Mr. Wood just show up at a Kent County Republican Meeting? He can meet a bunch of people there who are sure to vote in a primary.
