Finally, men win one
Mar 2nd, 2010 by David Anderson
The fashion industry became disconnected from the real world some time ago. Its insistence on trying to redefine beauty as a step above starvation has fallen flat, but it is just now beginning to come to grips with that reality. In Europe, it is now becoming cool to use “real women” in ad campaigns. These women are quite frankly much hotter to most heterosexual males than ones with boyish figures perfered by the gays who dominated the fashion industry. This is why the cultural icons of beauty have moved from the fashion industry to music and Hollywood. Carrie Underwood is more recognized as beautiful than 9 of the top 10 models for example. Sarah Evans, Jennifer Hudson, or Jennifer Lopez would never make in the modeling industry, but they have certainly found their place in pop culture.
I believe that the disconnect with the fashion industry was that it became dominated by the gay culture when it was trying to appeal to the larger culture. Don’t misinterpret my politically incorrect statement to be anti-gay. I am just saying that the tastes of gay men and straight men differ concerning women. Many gays are on the creative side hence their tendency to fields that value that characteristic. I am also saying that lack of diversity has hurt women because young women have bought into a view of beauty that the majority of men have not. The truth is men are not as picky as some women think. An average wife who is ready for you is better than a dream girl any day who is not. Beauty enhanced by relationship according to many studies. The woman in your arms is more beautiful than the one who won’t give you the time of day. The obsession of some young women that leads to eating disorders will never get them the relationship they want. If they put half of that energy into building a loving and mutually respectful relationship, they would be less depressed and more fulfilled.
That’s my view of the cultural currents. I look forward to yours.

So, fellas! (yeah!) fellas! (yeah!)
Has your girlfriend got the but ?
Baby got back !
Good assessment; of course, the average woman couldn’t afford the heroin-chic designer fashions, anyway.
Rick,
Most average women don’t need those “fashions” (I think most “fashionable” clothing is hideous personally) to look gorgeous.
While I applaud a healthy body image in fashion I’m having trouble with your stereotyping of what gay men in fashion consider “beauty.” Most, if not all, fashion designers (men and women, straight and gay) view models as breathing coat hangers. Their ultimate goal is how their design is presented, how the fabric moves. And that is true of all designers.
I think the reason you’ve focused on gay men has to do more with their un-closeted presence in the field. Gay fashion designers are no different than their straight counterparts in the industry. Go outside the industry and you’ll find a diversity of gay opinion when it comes to beauty.
And when it comes to couture… while I agree that most women don’t buy designer (de la Renta, Lauren, etc) runway fashion – designer runway fashion creates the seasons trends. For instance, if Calvin Klein is showing cropped jackets in Milan in the spring, then by fall cropped jackets will be displayed from Macy’s to Target. So while the average women may not spend 700.00 on one of Klein’s jackets chances are she will purchase a knock off style of the trend Klein set in motion.
It’s kinda funny how we can think we’re bucking fashion when we’re really all slaves to what designers displayed on the runways of Paris, NYC and Milan.
You just KNEW a DL blogger like Pandy was going to come prancing to the defense of homosexual fashion designers lol…classic. She does have a point though…I’ve known my share of gay men (yes I’m conservative, heterosexual and no I didn’t burn them alive for you DL bloggers) and just like hetero guys they have their own opinions. But most of what you SEE is the flamboyant gay men with lisps ordering around half dressed waifs of french, swiss or british descent. Bad David for assuming!
I wear T-shirts and jeans unless I have to wear polos or khakis or the rare suit…none of these things do I rush to the store to get the latest version of…in fact I think my undershirt today is a Charlie Copeland campaign T-shirt…so I’m not fashionista and thank the lord for that…I let my wife pick out the clothes because she’s much smarter at that and enjoys it…plus I have other things to worry about (like how to eviscerate progressives in debates)…but I get it, we all have our tastes. I say let fashion do what it wants and if you don’t like what they offer…capitalism allows you to go out and compete.
Hmmm… attack me and then agree with me? Jedi mind trick, Evan?
No one is attacking you Pandy…you’re one of my favorite DL bloggers…Pandy is just my pet name for yah
So you’d be okay if I called you Evelyn?
Sure if you enjoy being unoriginal
Hey Pandy…could be worse…you could have think123′s pet name: “Idiot”
And Pandy is original? When are we taking that walk on the East Side, Evan? I’ll buy at Walt’s. Just name the date!

I agree there is some diversity of tastes in the Gay Community, but not very much in the segment driving the fashion trends.
I disagree that the anyone is a slave to the elite runways. Most women don’t follow those fashions. Any bondage is by choice. Now by choice those chains are broken.
I do differ from the “real women” crowd in that we do not need to bash the slim in order to validate everyone else. We do need to stop pitting people against eaccch other and trying to convince some people that they are not beautiful because a minority of people think they are not. Especially if the leading edge of that minority wouldn’t appreciate womanhood’s beauty in the first place.
I’m just up the road every day Pandy;) No need to buy, I’m the evil capitalist here.
David – Women almost ALWAYS cut each other down. It’s just how many of them are. Case in point:
Scenario A – Single man goes out and is a total hound…he takes home a different woman every night…he’s grabbing models, actresses…divas…whatever…most men are ENVIOUS…most men are jealous…some men want to know his secret….almost NO MAN trashes the guy.
Scenario B – Single woman goes out and is a total hound…she takes home a different guy every night…she’s grabbing buff dudes, brilliant men, powerful guys…most women absolutely SHRED her in every way…they cut on her hair, cut on her style, cut on her body, cut on her face, cut on her in every way possible…almost NO WOMAN shows a desire to be her…despite the reality that if most of them could do what she was doing, they would.
Our modern, liberal culture teaches young women to be sluts. Isn’t it great!
I basically agree with Rick. A jigolo or a slut is not to be admired in my world. Both are sadly misguided people on a path that will bring loneliness and pain.
I understand Evan’s point. Women are more likely to cut down successful women than men are. Men are more likely to admire and seek to emulate successful men. It is called the queen bee syndrome. It is by no means universal of course so ladies don’t be offended if it doesn’t apply to you. If you are offended, send all emails to depolitics@gmail.com and I will forward them to Evan.
LOL! unless David wants to publish those hate mails in a column (I’m on board if you do) you can send them to my personal email directly queitschea@yahoo.com
But yes, David has it right, and no it’s not all which is why I phrased it the way I did. Most, almost always, etc.
And look, I stand with the liberals (NOT THE PROGRESSIVES) with regards to some of the social things most conservatives scoff at. If people in their 20′s and 30′s want to be single, want to mingle, want to experiment, I think they have a right to do whatever they want. I understand David’s point to some extent and agree that living that lifestyle can lead to some unfortunate results but it’s part of a learning experience for some people (many of whom come from homes who embrace that “liberal culture”). I say let’s focus on raising our families differently and when appropriate let’s encourage others to do the same but does that mean we cut down others? Not in my opinion. Everyone learns in different was so let the sluts and the jigolo’s figure it out at their own pace…most of them do.
“Rick
Our modern, liberal culture teaches young women to be sluts. Isn’t it great!”
It sure is…it sure is!
Hmm… gigolo and slut are both derogatory terms, and it’s interesting that, on this post, the men – who don’t cut people down – are the ones using them. Just sayin’.
Pandy, Pandy
Aww Pandy…”HERE SHE COMES TO SAVE THE DAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!! FASTER THAN A PELOSI/REID SPENDING BILL…MORE POWERFUL THAN THE PROGRESIVES IN CONGRESS…ABLE TO FUNCTION WITHOUT A SENSE OF HUMOR…IT’S SUPER LIBERAL!” Mild mannered Pandy is a normal chica (that’s diversity damnit!) in person but online she’s SUPER LIBERAL. Whenever there is a non politically correct statement, she’ll be there to defend the feelings of anyone or anything that could be offended by the wind blowing…she’s SUPER LIBERAL!
Hmm… gigolo and slut are both derogatory terms..
Duh.
Too bad this isn’t Delaware ‘Liberal,’ where you can censor posts you don’t like.
