Fighting Childhood Obesity
Feb 19th, 2010 by thatsElbert
The White House has set up a task force to combat childhood obesity. The First Lady is going to be the face of the campaign. Certainly encouraging Americans to adopt healthy lifestyles is a good cause. No one would question that. In light of the far left’s desire and attempt to takeover our health care system it gets me a little uneasy. Take note of this statement in the memorandum:
Without effective intervention, many more children will endure serious illnesses that will put a strain on our health-care system. We must act now to improve the health of our Nation’s children and avoid spending billions of dollars treating preventable disease.
One could only imagine our government waging this campaign in a government-run health care system. How would The White House handle something they say has “reached epidemic rates”? Would it translate as high taxes imposed on foods they say might be contributors to this problem? Forced fitness programs for offenders? Denial of services to those who don’t comply?
Let’s hope we never find out.

I believe that, after the proper weighing and measuring, the state should have the authority to wire a child’s mouth shut (‘lockjaw therapy’) for a period not to exceed six months.
On the prevention front, a new law that mandates that you must be 21-years-of-age to purchase candy, soda, salty snacks and fast food.

The First Lady’s effort will have zero effect, none. Like so many well intentioned schemes to improve our lives they try to control them.
Intact, loving and stable families are the best cure not omnipotent and inefficient government.

It’s appropriate for the government to encourage good eating habits, physical fitness, and the like. But it’s utterly inappropriate for the government to “intervene” with legislation, intruding into the personal lives of individuals. Better to let your child play with a hungry alligator, than allow this administration to “help” them.
Some parents need to pull the plug on the Wii, and tell their kids to get the hell out of the house. Young human bodies need to run, jump, fall, roll, bump and climb. They’ll eat better, they’ll sleep better and they’ll look better.
