DNC outspends GOP in Retreats
Apr 2nd, 2010 by David Anderson
I guess Hawaii costs less than D. C. and had better weather. The DNC spent 176K for their D. C. extravaganza. Both parties spent over an 100k for their retreats and strategy sessions. The Democrats in the very expensive city of Washington D. C. (so the President wouldn’t have to travel), and the Republicans at the beautiful 50th state which cost only 89k plus air travel for committee people which should add around 80k. That means the GOP spent less than the Democrats, but the Democrats get no mention about posh hotels in the press.
The truth is that resort locations are also convention locations because they know they need to cater to that segment. They have all of the facilities and it is often cheaper to use them. It is a treat to participants and most business people who run the numbers know that. That is why I laugh at the whining that so and so went to a conference in Orlando or where ever on our dime. If you are going to have them, the cheapest place is usually the resort areas where they have most of the conference space in America. On occasion you need face to face contact to resolve issues and get things moving. I don’t have a problem with either party having semi annual nation retreats to make certain decisions. I do have a problem with one acting hypocritically and mischaracterizing the other in a desperate attempt to undermine the middle class donor base of the other one. The DSCC is trying to do that. I for one will have fun pulling apart National Democrat expenses and illegal foreign gifts from the middle east if they want to play that game. Both parties should play by the same rules.
