Delaware’s Senate Race is Starting to go National
Jul 24th, 2010 by Timothy Pancoast
Delaware’s Senate race is starting to get some notice outside of the state. So far it is mainly online, but it is a begining. What is the interest, other than the fact that VP Biden once served in the position?
“The winner of the general election will not take office in 2011, but immediately after Election Day. That means if a Republican can beat Democratic nominee Chris Coons, they have the ability to block any lame-duck session shenanigans by Harry Reid.”

It is also interesting to read the comments and see how some people from out of state view the race.

And we can sure count on ole Mike Castle to stop those Democratic shenanigans, can’t we?
I wouldn’t hold your breath on that one. His track record proves he is not on our side.
Hey O’Neill, How is the Urquhart/O’Donnell Team doing? or should I say the “Nazi Guy & Bozo Show”. When I heard that O’Donnell endorsed Urquhart, the first thing I asked was how much was O’Donnell charging for endorsements? Rollins/Castle 2010!!!!
That means if a Republican can beat Democratic nominee Chris Coons..
‘If?’ It’s pretty much a done deal; the Socialist-Democrats picked a sure loser.
A sure loser?
Coons has raised in round numbers $1.3 million dollars. That’s about what Rollins, Urquhart and O’Donnell have raised all put together. He has just shy of a million in the bank. Again, that’s about what the three aforementioned Republicans have in the bank put together. He was twice elected county wide in New Castle, in which five-eights of Delawareans reside. And he’s running in a state with a three to two Democratic registration advantage.
Now is he an incompetent County Executive? Absolutely. Is he a vulnerable candidate? Unquestionably. Would he be a disasterous senator? Without a doubt. The answers to these questions are already settled fact about Mr. Coons.
But to say that he’s a “sure loser” is to ignore several important realities. Even Castle knows this will be the toughest fight of his long political career. Both Coons and the Democrats are well armed and well organized. To underestimate them would be disasterous.
Cool, when did O’Donnell endorse Urquhart? Nothing wrong with that but I missed it. Please tell me when. That would be interesting news. It is no question that she favors conservative candidates fighting the establishment but I never heard this one except as a joke by a commenter here. Mrs. Urquhart’s donation to Congressman Castle has since been balanced with one to Ms. O’Donnell so neither side has a complaint with her.
Everyone’s support is welcome and we would be delighted to receive the vote of any person who cares about this country, but I think she has her own campaign to worry about.

Get back to me in mid-November; we can talk ‘reality.’

Reality is that Castle is heavily favored. That does not mean that he does not have to run a very strong campaign to win, and faces a far stronger test than he has in possibly decades.
Both political and sports history are littered with heavily favored candidates and teams who came up with flat efforts against determined underdogs, and some how lost what seemed to be a sure thing.
Anyone hear about the 1969 World Champion Baltimore Orioles? Or the 1995 Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings? Or the undefeated 19-0 2007 New England Patriots? How about Mike Tyson’s easy knockout of Buster Douglas? Governor John Carney anyone?
There is no such thing as an opponent with a seven figure bank balance who is not a clear and present danger, especially with a three to two registration advantage for his party. He must be treated as such.
If Republicans handle this the right way, then Rick’s “reality” will be so. If we think its in the bag because we’ve got an undefeated candidate who has rarely had a close race…

I don’t care how much money he has. The average Delawarean wouldn’t know it if he were sitting right next to them. He has zero recognizably.
Again, get back to me in November.
looks like Christine’s E-Media team are earning their fees. I’m impressed.
Michael, in fairness a lot of that money recently came from Coons himself. Obviously money is money, but I doubt he can finance an entire Senate campaign in this market. I really think the only reason that he is gaining as much as he is in the polls is the disunity in the party, once we pick a candidate(most likely Castle) and the infighting and sadly outright attacking stops we should be fine.
I agree he is a threat, but I like our chances. Still can’t forget races like “Dewey Defeats Truman”
Won’t need to get back to you. We both agree Castle’s going to win. I just say, he’s going to have to work for it.
George, I certainly agree with that. Most of the damage Castle’s ship is taking is to it’s starboard side.

Depends on what your definition of ‘work’ is.
