Delaware’s Illegal Immigration Debate is About to Begin
Jun 4th, 2010 by Timothy Pancoast
The Illegal Immigration Battle has been going of and on since the second term of the Bush Administration. So far Delaware has not figured very prominently in the national debate, but now the state of is officially joining the fray. For months the different viewpoints on illegal immigration have been preparing and fortifying their positions. There have been feints on both sides, but now that the end of the state’s legislative session is drawing near it things are going to heat up. There are multiple bills being drafted in the Legislature that take a variety of positions on illegal immigration. Some of those will soon be numbered and make their way to committee. Our Governor and Legislators are starting to take sides in this debate, and the unofficial fourth branch of the government has stepped into high gear on the issue. The News Journal has assigned Esteban Parra to cover the illegal immigration beat and today he rolled out an article on the subject. No matter what position you take on Illegal Immigration, Enforcement, Border Security, Amnesty, and Immigration Reform this article is worth a read because it does do a fair job of setting the stage for the debate, laying out a few of the key players, and helping people catch up with what has happened in the state so far concerning illegal immigration. There is a lot more going on than what is stated in the article, but trust me there will be plenty more to follow.
Illegal immigration is a major factor in the United States today. Believe it or not it is also a big issue in Delaware. The debate will happen; the only question is how long it will last in Delaware. If our legislature decides to try to silence the issue quickly and avoids the serious debate they should be having now, then rest assured it will be back to haunt them, because Delaware and the nation can’t afford to leave the illegal immigrant situation unresolved.

As long as the vice president’s son is the AG, Delaware’s position on immigration will be in lock step with the Obama administration.
Using the power of population exponents, Hispanics will control the Congress within forty years. Since they tend to bring their culture with them, rather than assimilate, and since non-Cuban Hispanics in Congress today tend to support the failed socialism prevelent in most of Latin America today, the ‘debate’ may be a day late and a dollar short.
There are ways to control illegal immigration and they are quite simple but the political leaders of this country are weak and without principle.
I remember flying in the Marine Corps over 20 years ago on Border Patrol missions near San Diego. We thought we were doing some good but in the end we were providing political cover for what became amnesty. Get tough on the border while we cave in.
1. Secure the border by all means necessary
2. Make E Verify mandatory for all employers
3. Put in place a Visa verification by a private vendor (credit card company)
4. Adopt the same immigration laws as Mexico (felony, deportation etc)
5. Use smart card technology on driver’s licenses and SS cards
6. Eliminate birthright citizenship as most other countries do not honor that right.

Fightingbluehen, I agree. Any action to defend Delaware from illegal immigration will be hampered as long as we have a Biden in office here in Delaware. It is unfortunate, but true.
Rick, I wouldn’t mind who was representing me in Congress as long as they were a Delawarean, had assimilated into the culture, and had a reasonably conservative stance on the Constitution. If the United States returned to its melting pot days we would be better off, but as long as we have a massive illegal immigration problem there will be large segments of the population living here that will not and can not merge into the local culture.
Laws are what matter not personality. The AG is not that powerful of a positon. AG Biden will be out in 4 years, but the laws will stay on the books.
Hispanics seem to be a swing voting group. They voted for Bush and McCain in their states and went pretty much 50/50 for Bush and close for Reagan. Culturally, they are natural Republicans. The third generation would be pretty much a Republican constituency if the border states are an indicator. Like Tim, I have no issue with a Hispanic majority. It will be what it is.
The key is to do what we did with the Italian and southern European immigrants. Bring them in and don’t push them away. There were people who were saying aweful things about them. They were “dirty”, “lazy”, and wanted to keep the old ways because they were proud of their heritage and didn’t throw away their language or food. The same type of crap people say about Latinos. They assimulated very well. They didn’t need to forget Italian to learn English. We just started eating Italian food. I am not buying that the Latino “invasion” as some hardliners call it is bad for America. It is only bad if we stop teaching the children Americanism. That would be our fault not theirs.
You need to visit Los Angeles; it is America’s future, and an ugly one.
