Attorney General Denn Not Running for Reelection

UPDATED WITH an exclusive interview with GOP State Chairman Michael Harrington Sr. Attorney General Matthew Denn announced his decision not to run for reelection to the office of Attorney General. He discussed his reasons, which can be read here. They are basically that he is burnt out from 5 statewide campaigns in 12 years and wants to spend more time with his family. He also seems to believe the administrative duties of the AG office keep him from focusing on the big issues. He is planning to find a private sector position which will allow him to contribute. Delaware AG to Crackdown on “Hate Crimes” in Schools

Department of Justice Reissues Guidances to Law Enforcement and Schools on Hate Crimes  Friday, August 25th, 2017 Categories:  Department of Justice DOJ Press Releases New Anti-Bullying Video Directed To Students Also Released for New School Year Delaware Attorney General Matt Denn reiterated Friday the Delaware Department of Justice’s position that “Threats and intimidation against our neighbors based on who they are will not be accepted here in Delaware,” and reissued enforcement guidelines from last November to schools and law enforcement on responses to hate speech. Attorney General Denn also released a new video aimed at returning school students about bullying and mutual respect. Attorney General Denn’s legal guidance to Delaware law enforcement agencies focuses on criminal statutes that may relate to charges involving “threats and epithets directed at minority groups.” Read more

Changes at Justice

Attorney General Matt Denn had an interesting second day. He announced his new team and created an office of Civil Rights and Public Trust. The early moves at the State Attorney General's office show the different public mood is than when Attorney General Biden took office 8 years ago. Then the big issue was the sex offender, now it is civil rights, police incident investigations, and public integrity. The move to establish a Civil Rights and Public Integrity office is definitely informed by the political mood of the day, but it is an idea that is long overdue in this state. The current structure is inadequate. There is a void between the Human Relations Commission with its limited jurisdiction and federal action in many cases.
