Senator Tom Carper Comments on Defeating ISIS at Home

U.S. Senator Tom Carper(D- DE), through his electronic Newsletter "Carpers Connection" (12/13/2015) comments on Defeating ISIS at Home: Dear Friends, This week, the Philadelphia Inquirer published my op-ed that shares my views on what I believe to be the greater threat to our homeland – homegrown terrorism driven or inspired by ISIS. Tragically, as the San Bernardino, California attacks underscored, the threat of a homegrown attack and self-radicalization is all too real. In my op-ed, I explain what we need to do to counter this threat and defeat ISIS here at home. You can read my op-ed below or click the link: “Defeat ISIS here at home .” The recent attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Calif., have made it all too clear that terrorists’ threats to Americans and our allies are real. Whether these recent attacks were coordinated or inspired by ISIS or another terrorist Read more

USG Offers Redress for NO-Fly Listees

By: Wolf von Baumgart, Staff Writer No longer will persons on the infamous DHS/TSA NO-Fly List be legally left "hanging in the air". The US Government, in response to legal challenges, has revised its redress procedures for persons placed on Department of Homeland Security's NO-Fly List, according to an article in FAS Roundup. The US Department of Justice announced in an April 13,2015 court filing that persons placed on the NO-Fly List will have new opportunities to challenge the denial of boarding on commercial aircraft. Before the ruling, the government steadfastly refused to confirm or deny that persons were placed on the list for reasons of national security. Challengers argued that the procedures were constitutionally deficient or otherwise improper. The entire article by Steven Aftergood can be read here: Read more

Carper Blasts Curious Timing of President’s Immigration Memo

Senator Carper was quoted in the state's largest newspaper criticizing the timing of the President's grant of temporary amnesty to 5 million undocumented immigrants. It is as if the administration wanted a fight turning down the advice of its party Homeland Security Committee Chair. The $1.1 trillion spending bill awaiting Obama’s signature funds all other federal agencies through Sept. 30. The deal that produced the bill gives Republicans a chance next year, when they will take control of the Senate and expand their majority in the House, to block Obama’s immigration order, using the Homeland Security Department’s finances as leverage. “No one told me this, I just think the president was hell-bent to do it,” Carper said of the executive order. “(He) thought it was the right thing to do, and went ahead. We’re turning out to have a productive lame duck, at least with Read more

Dover Responds Well

The talk around town is the sick child quarantined at KGH. It is national news The child was from Liberia and had symptoms that led Bayhealth to take Ebola precautions. The good news is three-fold. First, CDC thinks that we are out of the Ebola window. Public health has issued a statement to that effect as well. Second, Bayhealth is handling the situation on the ground well. Third, the Mayor is very engaged in this. I contacted him 11:30 pm Sunday about this. He was already up. He tracked down information until 1:15 am then called me around 6:30 am with an update. He had meetings at 7 and 7:30am for starters. We are developing new communication protocols. I am very pleased with the fact that Mayor Robin Christensen shares our concerns and is engaged. I want to assure my fellow citizens that we are not idly waiting for things to happen. I know many people are concerned and Read more

DHS To Release Thousands Of Illegal Immigrants, Blaming Sequestration

According to Fox News, the DHS has started releasing hundreds of illegal immigrants being held in local jails because of expected budgets cuts. Arizona's Pinal County Sheriff, Paul Babeu said Tuesday, that Immigration and Customs Enforcement had released more than 500 detainees. Babeu described the move as "mass budget pardon" and suggested the administration was going to unnecessary lengths to demonstrate the impact of the so-called sequester. "President Obama would never release 500 criminal illegals to the streets of his home town, yet he has no problem with releasing them in Arizona. The safety of the public is threatened and the rule of law discarded as a political tactic in this sequester battle." he said. An ICE official confirmed the plans without specifying how many illegal immigrants might be released. Spokeswoman Gillian Christensen said ICE had directed field offices Read more
