Donald Trump Comments on Death of Fidel Castro

President-Elect Donald J. Trump Statement re: Death of Fidel Castro "Today, the world marks the passing of a brutal dictator who oppressed his own people for nearly six decades. Fidel Castro’s legacy is one of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty and the denial of fundamental human rights. "While Cuba remains a totalitarian island, it is my hope that today marks a move away from the horrors endured for too long, and toward a future in which the wonderful Cuban people finally live in the freedom they so richly deserve. "Though the tragedies, deaths and pain caused by Fidel Castro cannot be erased, our administration will do all it can to ensure the Cuban people can finally begin their journey toward prosperity and liberty. I join the many Cuban Americans who supported me so greatly in the presidential campaign, including the Brigade 2506 Veterans Association Read more

Giving Thanks Through Giving Back By: Delaware Governor,Jack Markell The first Thanksgiving, which took place nearly 400 years ago, launched a tradition of coming together to give thanks, break bread, and deepen connections between neighbors. I hope that on this Thanksgiving weekend you have the opportunity to do the same. While I have always appreciated this opportunity to gather with family and friends and focus on all we have to be thankful for, as Governor, I’ve also had the privilege to better recognize the Delawareans who quietly work every day to make our communities stronger, with little fanfare. They are public employees, including service providers, public safety workers, educators, and many more, and all the support staff who make the impact of their collective work possible. They are the men and women in uniform who are deployed abroad in service to our state and country, Read more

Celebrating Delaware’s Thriving Tourism Economy By: Linda Parkowski I’m Linda Parkowski, Delaware Tourism Director. Tourism is big business for Delaware. It’s a fact I share with people all over the state every day. Since 2009 tourism employment in Delaware is up 25 percent. The industry is currently responsible for 52,000 jobs in Delaware. It now produces $3 billion a year in economic impact for the state. That saves each Delaware household nearly $1,400 in taxes annually. This makes attracting visitors and their dollars to the state essential. One of the biggest efforts made in recent years to do that has been a new tourism branding for the state. When we rolled out “Visit Delaware: Endless Discoveries” in 2015, we wanted to spark possible visitors’ curiosity, lead on them on a journey of discovery. A part of that was television advertising in TV markets surrounding Read more

DE Governor’s Weekly Message 11/11/2016: Ending Veteran Homelessness in Delaware

Ending Veteran Homelessness in Delaware By: Delaware Governor, Jack Markell In 2015, we committed to ending and preventing homelessness among veterans in Delaware. I said something then that remains true today: Even one homeless veteran is one too many. That’s why this week I was thrilled to announce that – after more than a year’s work with our local, state and federal partners – we have effectively ended veteran homelessness in our state. We now have the systems in place to ensure that homelessness is prevented whenever possible; that it is rare, brief and does not reoccur. Many groups deserve our thanks for their work to ensure that all veterans in Delaware have a safe, quality place to call home. The Delaware State Housing Authority led the statewide initiative with support from the U.S. Departments of Housing and Urban Development and Veterans Affairs, but it would not have Read more

DON AYOTTE Comments on Election EVE

By: Wolf von Baumgart, Staff Writer On the day before the 2016 Delaware General Election, Independent Party of Delaware (IPoD) 20th District State Representative candidate Don Ayotte shares his thoughts: "America is at a most critical crossroads. The choices that we make will radically affect our future. We have a choice between living in a constitutional republic or a social dictatorship. That is why we must choose a path of individual freedom and liberty that will lead to greater prosperity. The alternative is very bleak indeed." "Fortunately, there is a new spirit of Independence dawning throughout the land. The special interest driven two-party system and its political polarization no longer serves the People. WE need a constructive independent alternative. That's why I am running to serve the people of the 20th District in the Delaware House of Representatives" Don Ayotte Read more

Improving Quality of Life with New Trails and Pathways By: Delaware Governor, Jack Markell This week we marked the beginning of construction on the final link of the New Castle Industrial Track Trail, a critical segment of the 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway. When complete, it will join with the Wilmington riverfront to provide a walking and bicycling connection between downtown Wilmington and Old New Castle. It will create commuting options for Delawareans who live and work downtown and expand recreational opportunities for area residents and visitors. This groundbreaking marks another step in the great progress we have seen in making our state more walkable and bikeable. We’ve added 50 miles of new pathways and trails, and raised our ranking among the most bike-friendly states from 31st to third. When we first announced the Delaware Trails and Pathways initiative I could Read more

By: Wolf von Baumgart, Staff Writer The three candidates for 20th District State Representative faced each other in an open forum, sponsored by the Paynters Mill HOA last night. IPoD Breaks Registration Record Again

The Independent Party of Delaware (IPoD) has announced that it has surpassed its monthly voter registration for the second consecutive month. For the month of October, 606 voters joined its ranks, topping September's record high of 263. "Virtually all of this growth was organic and voter-initiated -- not the result of party-sponsored voting registration efforts, according to a party spokesman. "This figure was especially significant considering that voting registration for the 2016 general election closed on October 15. We have excellent chances to elect candidates on November 8.", he said. The majority of the expansion took place in New Castle County, followed by good numbers in Sussex and Kent counties. Honoring Teachers for Their Role in Shaping our Children’s Future By: Delaware Governor, Jack Markell We know that a major factor in student achievement is an excellent teacher, and we can’t overstate the important role our educators play in shaping our children’s future. That’s why we’re supporting them in more ways through professional learning communities in schools, new teacher leadership roles, and compensation for professional development and national certification. Delaware has many outstanding educators, and this week I was honored to announce that our 2017 Delaware Teacher of the Year is Wendy Turner, a second grade teacher at Mount Pleasant Elementary in the Brandywine School District. Wendy was one of twenty nominees from school districts and the charter school network, and together these exceptional men and women represent thousands of dedicated and passionate Read more

Highlights of Donald Trump’s Gettysburg Address:

“I’m not a politician, and have never wanted to be one. But when I saw the trouble our country was in, I knew I couldn’t stand by and watch any longer. Our country has been so good to me, I love our country, I felt I had to act,” said Mr. Trump in his address. “Change has to come from outside this broken system. The fact that the Washington establishment has tried so hard to stop our campaign is only more proof that our campaign represents the kind of change that only arrives once in a lifetime,” he continued. “I am asking the American people to rise above the noise and the clutter of our broken politics, and to embrace that great faith and optimism that has always been the central ingredient in the American character. I am asking you to dream big. “What follows is my 100-day action plan to Make America Great Again. It is a contract between Donald J. Trump and the Read more

Providing New Access to Information that Impacts the Lives of Delaware Families By: Delaware Governor, Jack Markell To be effective, government must be transparent. That’s why within the first 6 months of my administration, we launched the Delaware Checkbook website which gave unprecedented access to state spending information. We also enacted the most comprehensive updates ever to Delaware’s Freedom of Information Act, making it easier for the public to get access to government documents. And we expanded disclosure of campaign donations because the public has a right to know which groups support a candidate for public office. Earlier this year, we took another important step when I signed Executive Order 57, which established an Open Data Council, and laid the groundwork for an open data portal. As we celebrate this week's launch of that portal, we know it will only be effective Read more

Delaware Launches New Data Portal

Speaking at 1313 Innovation, a Wilmington co-working space, he officially activated data.delaware.gov, yesterday evening. The Governor signed Executive Order 57 establishing the Open Data Portal earlier this year. The system is designed to make a vast array of non-identifiable data across traditional state agency lines and enable flexible interactive user-sorting and GIS capabilities including maps, charts, enhanced graphics and much more. It even includes an "Open Checkbook" feature, making it easier to utilize state financial data (including state employee's expense reports) via checkbook.delaware.gov. “The Open Data Portal reflects our commitment to creating higher levels of openness Read more

Expanding Successful Downtown Development Program By: Delaware Governor, Jack A. Markell Vibrant downtowns are crucial drivers of economic growth and they are central to our efforts to strengthen the quality of life. More than ever, Delawareans want to live and work in our urban cores that are close to transportation networks and entertainment and recreation opportunities, and that’s why we are investing in our downtowns through the Downtown Development District program. Since last year, when we launched the program in Wilmington, Dover and Seaford, $14 million in grants through the Delaware State Housing Authority has leveraged more than $290 million in private investment. That’s helping Wilmington small businesses like Sterling Grille perform needed renovations, and funding residential construction in downtown Dover. Just this week, in Seaford, I observed progress at the Residences Read more

Sustaining Delaware’s Strong Economy Through Employment Growth By: Delaware Governor, Jack Markell Delaware’s economy today is strong, with the lowest unemployment rate in a decade and job growth that leads the region. But that doesn’t happen by accident. Businesses today can choose to locate just about anywhere, and the Markell Administration works tirelessly to attract and retain employers — from the largest corporations that hire thousands of Delawareans, to our small businesses who collectively employ more people than any other sector, to entrepreneurs and start-ups with the next great idea. Advancing Employment Opportunities for Individuals of All Abilities By:Delaware Governor, Jack Markell Last week, Governor Markell and I joined young people with disabilities, their parents and advocates as we celebrated the success of Pathways to Employment. Pathways supports young people age 14 to 25 as they make their transition from school to the world of work. Inspired by Governor Markell’s commitment to advancing employment opportunities for people of all abilities, the Department of Health and Social Services started Pathways about a year ago as the first program of its kind in the country. With financial support from our Medicaid program, we’re helping reduce the barriers to employment through such services as assistive technology, career exploration and personal care. We’re grateful for the strong support we’ve received from the Delaware Department of Labor’s Division Read more
