And As Suddenly As It Was Proposed…

…it was taken off the table.
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about Governor Jack Markell’s shocking budget proposals…8% across the board pay cuts for state workers…and a spastic expansion of casino gambling. I called it “Fear Mongering And Loathing in Las Vegas Delaware” and I asked this question:
…is all of this just simply fear mongering so when the Governor and his staff figure out their real plan for the state we’ll all be relieved and grateful?
The proposals for 3 new casinos and turning 10 restaurants and bars into sports betting venues have been yanked, for now at least. What’s still on the table? It looks like our existing racinos will get sports betting, but have to shell out more money to the state.
So those of you who were concerned about the rapid, visionless, frantic expansion of gambling in Delaware are supposed to breathe a sigh of relief *WHEW* and thank the Governor for not turning your neighborhood into…well…crap.
Now I guess we just have to wait and see what that 8% across the board pay cut for state employees ends up looking like when the dust settles and all of the fear mongering dies down….
UPDATE: Check out Mike Matthews live blogging from the Committee hearing on HB 100. Could the whole issue be “tabled”?
UPDATE: The substitute legislation passed through committee.
