A Tale of Two Standards: O’Donnell v. Rollins

Aug 5th, 2010 by David Anderson

Personally, I do not even care about personal disclosure forms for Congress. They are the province of the nosy and serve no public good. Some people seem to place a good deal of store in them. Well I never heard them place any store in them until this year when even an attorney’s heart attack did not stop them from harping for Christine O’Donnell’s report. Why? Was it to find potential conflicts of interest regarding investments. No, just so they could trumpet the fact that she had to sell off assets in these troubled times.

O’Donnell’s report is in. Mike Castle’s is in. Chris Coons is in. Glen Urquart’s has been in. John Carney’s is in. Who is missing? Michele Rollins’ is not in. Does it really matter? No, apparently it doesn’t matter even to the people who were outraged at the very thought Ms. O’Donnell was granted an extension pursuant to the law. Ms. Rollins also was granted a similar extension and as of yesterday was reported not to have filed the report.  As for Ms. Rollins, pay the $200 for all I care. It is none of anyone’s business what you have unless you get elected. I don’t see that happening so keep your privacy. Not only do you not have to worry about me complaining, you don’t have to worry about the self appointed guardians of the public’s right to know.

Remember this exchange http://www.delawarepolitics.net/christine-bashing-a-favorite-establishment-sport/ ? What is it I hear regarding Ms. Rollins from the other side? Silence. It just proves my point that the silly tempest was just petty Christine Bashing and nothing to do with any high sounding principle.

The delay is for the Jamaican translation. They only work 2 hours a day there.

Not to worry, Priscilla has it covered. The biggest problem the GOP has is ole Prissy.

  2. on 06 Aug 2010 at 06:412I am the truth

At a lower level I would love to see the state and county people who hawk their wares at the expense of the taxpayers. You know Delucca and Rose Henry. As for candidates I found out Janet Lofink Kilpatrick works for the House ( our tax $$) and then goes to local meetings using her House job to assist her campaign. Her husband Vinnie would be proud.

  3. on 06 Aug 2010 at 06:473Pat Fish

I feel exactly like you, David. I lose no sleep over the lack of Michelle Rollins’ campaign report.

But the anti-O’Donnell nuts, who can occasionally be seen baying at the moon, are astonishingly silent on this matter, aren’t they?

  4. on 06 Aug 2010 at 07:344Rick

I am outraged that the affluent Rollins, who can afford a phalanx of tax attorneys and accountants, cannot even keep track of her campaign finances. This is an egregious and irresponsible oversight- if it is a mere oversight.

Someone who can’t or won’t comply with routine financial disclosures, certainly can’t be counted on to carry-out the complex responsibilities she would incur as our representative in Washington.

Does she pay her boyfriend’s caviar bill, too?

  5. on 06 Aug 2010 at 09:135Michael P. Borgia

I absolutely agree that if Mrs. Rollins has failed to file the required disclosures, then the people who tore apart Christine O’Donnell for failing to file hers in a timely manner, should be after Mrs. Rollins with equal venom.

It’s only fair. The rules are the rules and they apply with equal force to everyone.

  6. on 06 Aug 2010 at 09:446Publius

My understanding is that Rollins’ report was filed; unlike Ms. O’Donnell’s joke of a filing (she really needed a lawyer to review what she filed? you’re kidding right?), the Rollins’ statement is, I am told, quite complex and lengthy, as one would suspect. It has not yet been posted on the web, but it has been filed. So, do a little more due diligence before posting falsehoods (like maybe checking with her campaign? there’s a thought).

Oh, and by the way, unlike O’Donnell, Rollins has never received letters from the FEC citing her for non-compliance and failing to file forms.

So you too agree that Christine can’t be counted on to carry out the complex responsiblities she would incur as out Senator in Washington. Glad to see you are coming around Rick.

The interest in Christine’s filing was in response to her evasive response to questions if she was getting personal financial support from her campaign. It is understandable that after her numerous inaccuracies, citings by the FEC, and lack of transparency that people would have questions. None of the O’Donnellistas can answer how Christine is living on $366.00 a month. Nor can anyone say how she is making up this shortfall? Christine’s crew can’t answer honestly answer questions so they divert attention from her shortcomings
The O’donnell strategy is to divert attnetion . They do this is by:
    1. Attacking Mike Castle inaccurately by accusing him of a bizarre plot to switch parties and then resign in favor of Beau Biden.
    2. Smearing two honest bloggers by accusing them of being on the Castle Payroll.
    3. Changing the subject with an attack on Michelle Rollins from the communications director of Glen Urquhart.

Can’t compare Michelle to Christine. Sounds like Game, Set, Match to me.

  11. on 06 Aug 2010 at 12:1711David

They are slow over there. I am only going by yesterday’s news which is when the Secretary of State’s office in Delaware last checked.

I checked with Washington and the Delaware Secretary of State which provided the others for me. They checked with Washington this week and were told that she had not filed.

BTW Tenn. If this is an attack, she really is to soft for politics. There was nothing negative said about Ms. Rollins in the entire post. It was aimed at some others.

  12. on 06 Aug 2010 at 12:2112David

Do you really want me to pull the state quote which said she didn’t file? I just may if you want to accuse me of spreading falsehood.

Remember, I reported that she obtained a legal extension. I have no issue with that. She followed the law. End of story. My point is that O’Donnell also followed the law, but some didn’t find that good enough. Where are they now? Getting realistic when it is their candidate.

  13. on 06 Aug 2010 at 12:5313Rick

Glad to see you are coming around Rick.

    No, I’m not ‘coming around.’

O’Donnell, unlike Rollins, doesn’t have ‘a phalanx of tax attorneys and accountants’ to handle her financial disclosures.

David the entire post is aimed at Rollins. Her name is in the Title. At least do our readers the courtesy of identifying yourself as the Communications Director of the Urquhart Campaign. The O’Donell Campaign tramples on transparency. This blog should not.

  16. on 06 Aug 2010 at 13:3816Joe Cass

Anderson, pwned AGAIN! You just don’t don’t get it! I’m sitting over here witnessing a circular firing squad with nary a soul to throw in a flag, but plenty of offers of ammo. With all due respect, what the heck are you people aiming at? You can’t seriously believe we prefer big government and high taxes, do you? I’m unemployed and I drive a ’89 pickemup. We painfully acknowledge the Obama hasn’t delivered, and I’m not talking public option. I’m talking bank bail-outs, unending wars, porous borders, transparency that hasn’t happened and corruption, to name a small bite of the problems. When I can’t find solutions here, I go there. You ever mix cement? It’s a four part recipe. That recipe changes due to requirement, or season, or weather or design. There is no one size fits all! How about you all keep your god to yourselves, actually sort that mess out among ya- ’cause you got so many issues there its paralyzing to your movement. I can’t go on trying to reach you. You only see want you want to see, and you only see what your corporate/religious masters allow. Come on, man. This is America and we’re the best! We can do even better together. Thanks for allowing my diatribe, Dave.

  17. on 06 Aug 2010 at 14:1917Publius

    Dave,
Christine only asked for an extension after her report was already months late (indeed, she only apparently sought it after the good folks at DelawareTomorrow started asking where it was). Rollins timely asked for and received an extension. A bit of a difference there.

  18. on 06 Aug 2010 at 15:5818Tennessee Walker

Publius don’t ask for objecitvity from the Communications Director of the Urquhart Campaign.

    Thoughts on Michele Rollins -

Is she having personal/campaign financial problems?
As I recall, after choosing to not pay for a table at the Great Conservative Cookout, then showing up with about 8 tee shirted campaigners she had the nerve to go onstage and try to commandeer the microphone from those who paid for the privilege. Failing at that, she shoved Eric Bodenwiser’s literature aside on his paid table and put hers out before stomping out of the hall. I don’t know what her problem is. The cost was $100 for the table, mic time and to feed the supporters. Possibly she is just short of funds and is covering up the fact. I don’t know – but I do know that from two encounters with her, she is a sour bitter woman. It certainly shows!

Fortunately, Glen is a political breath of fresh air! He wants the office so he can make a real difference – and he isn’t above working for our vote. Even with hours and hours of shaking hands, asking for peoples votes, he never seems too busy to hear their concerns or answer their questions. He is the epitome of ‘citizen politician’ that we need!

  21. on 06 Aug 2010 at 20:4021Rick

You were actually making some sense, until-

..you only see what your corporate/religious masters allow..

    Uhhhh, okay. Riiiight.

I have not heard this previously from anyone else. Can anyone else who was at the Cookout confirm this?

  23. on 06 Aug 2010 at 20:5823Publius

C’mon, enough of the falsehoods and innuendo. The Rollins campaign has raised 4 times the money Urquhart has. She didn’t sponsor a table because, strangely enough, when the campaign inquired, the event had run out of sponsorships (as was discussed earlier on this blog, when has anyone ever seen that happen?). And, only sponsors were then allowed to speak. All very convenient. A little too convenient if you ask me. Almost as if someone didn’t want Rollins to be able to speak…. hmmm…

  24. on 06 Aug 2010 at 21:5624JC

That’s it Cal! Michelle Rollins is cash strapped. You saw it before anyone. Of course. Obama and the evil socialist Democrats taxed her money away. You could write for Disney, special agent double aught Cal. As long as you shave that ‘stache and keep on being homophobic. I see a Pixar film in you, right along the lines of “Finding Nemo”

  25. on 06 Aug 2010 at 22:2325Cal

Well, my wife and I were there – we saw it. You could check with Bill Colley – he has was involved as the MC – repeated virtually the same story, maybe you should ask Eric Bodenwiser – he was the one complaining that he paid for the sponsorship and table that she was trying to take over.

There were between 1,200 and 1,500 there – they weren’t too happy with things, but being the good people they are, they just ignored her.

Oh, would you like to see a picture of her ‘smiling face’ and a couple of her blue-shirts – immediately after these photos they began pushing ahead of her- I just so happen to have a couple that I took. I would have taken one as she put out the literature, but didn’t have any interest in a picture of her backside.

    http://www.pixiesites.com/Sany0035

    http://www.pixiesites.com/Sany0034

All this ridiculous poo-pooing of everything that doesn’t enhance the talking points of Castle or Rollins camps is very telling – you seem to think that if you repeat your story enough that others will begin to believe it like you have lulled yourself into believing. The main ones you are fooling are yourselves.

Just think, what would the prudent person do – she could have shown up if as some have said that there were no tables, socialized with the voters and not disturbed any of the sponsors. But, the ungracious one chose to be a real a**. Do you think I would EVER vote for someone like that?

If you do, you don’t know me…

Now, how about some proof of the wild claims you are making… Got any?

    Okay I Was Wrong
Jul 23rd, 2010 by David Anderson

Here we are not too proud to admit errors. On my face book I said that Mrs. Rollins refused to sponsor the event. I want to publicly withdraw that statement. I stand by the rest, but Tennessee was correct. I asked the person who received the call and that was confirmed. When was she contacted, the sponsorships were refused along with conservatives Greg Hastings and Gerald Hocker who had made the same request earlier because the slots were filled. It was not a conspiracy. Mrs. Rollins was not treated differently there. It would have been perfectly fine to exclude her. She was not solicited, but she would have been accepted. When she contacted DCC, it was too late.
The rumors were already dismissed by David Anderson.

  27. on 07 Aug 2010 at 11:4327Cal

    >>>All very convenient. A little too convenient if you ask me. Almost as if someone didn’t want Rollins to be able to speak…. hmmm…<<<

    Another conspiracy theory?

I know of one other candidate who didn't sponsor and who placed his signs on the long driveway and without fanfare talked to constituents, answering questions and hearing their concerns. Without complaints.

Not so for Michele Rollins – Her style of 'job interview' for the employment by 'We the People' seems to consist of – 'I'm rich – I'm entitled – I'll do whatever I want'..

    Doesn't fly with me…

  28. on 07 Aug 2010 at 11:5428Cal

    >>>I have not heard this previously from anyone else. Can anyone else who was at the Cookout confirm this?<<<

You might like to ask my wife – or Bill Colley (the MC) or Eric Bodenweiser (whose space she tried to commandeer)

p.s. I have two photos I took of her as she approached Eric's table – past Urquhart's and Colin's table where she put out the literature – I would have taken a picture of that, but being too close, all I would have had was a picture of her rump and I had absolutely no interest in that.

  29. on 07 Aug 2010 at 11:5829Cal

Oh, if anyone would like to see the sweet, smiling Michele’s pictures they are at pixiesites dot c o m slash Sany0034 and 35.

  30. on 07 Aug 2010 at 18:3330cookie

Sure Cal. If Urquhart ever gets past the primary the Dempsey will have a field day with Glen “Nazi Gaffe” Urquhart. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?desktop_uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D0kh4xhem8tM&v=0kh4xhem8tM&gl=US

  31. on 07 Aug 2010 at 18:3531cookie

I meant the Dems not Dempsey.

  32. on 08 Aug 2010 at 09:1532Cal

Hmmmmm, now what can we make of that foible……

Dempsey – Jack Dempsey – Champion boxer just before the Great Depression… A prognosticational referral to today’s Dem. party?????

Or maybe it was a referral to his comment to his wife after he lost to Tunney – “Honey, I forgot to duck.” This phrase was later used by President Ronald Reagan to Nancy after Reagan was shot in the assassination attempt in 1981.

Maybe Glen should have related ‘Separation of Church and State’ to Pontius Pilate – that certainly predates Hitler and was equally applicable…

Guess my point is – Let’s be realistic about what matters!

  33. on 08 Aug 2010 at 09:4533Rick

Dempsey – Jack Dempsey – Champion boxer just before the Great Depression..

Duhhhh. Did you have to Google that?

Rick, I try to verify my thoughts – yep, Google’s a great tool for that!

p.s. While I am pretty old, but Dempsey/Tunney fight was only one I heard about when I was young.

About the earliest I remember were Joe Lewis vs. ‘Jersey Joe’ Walcott that I listened to on shortwave radio when I was about 11 or 12. (Didn’t have to Google that.)

  36. on 08 Aug 2010 at 21:1236anon

David – To help support TW’s point, here’s the lead to a hypothetical newspaper story that any reasonably competent reporter (Ginger Gibson, where are you?) could write just based on this post.

    >>>> The spokesman for a Republican House candidate has said that voters don’t have the right to know about how congressional candidates earn their money.
David Anderson, spokesman for GOP hopeful Glen Urquhart, wrote in a blog post last week that candidates are entitled to their privacy, and voters shouldn’t be able to determine who writes the paychecks to their prospective elected officials.
“It is none of anyone’s business what you have unless you get elected,” Anderson wrote at DelawarePolitics.net. “You don’t have to worry about the self appointed guardians of the public’s right to know.”
Financial disclosure laws are designed to make Congress more transparent, providing voters with a look at how their representatives make their living, stock holdings that might influence their votes and other sources of income that could have a bearing on their actions once in office.
Anderson’s candidate, Urquhart, has filed his financial disclosure forms. Anderson was commenting on the financial travails of fellow conservative candidate Christine O’Donnell, running in Delaware’s U.S. Senate primary. Her disclosure forms, as documented by the DelawareTomorrow blog, revealed that the marketing consultant lives on just $13 a day. <<<<<<
