31st News– Poliquin has successful event
Nov 14th, 2009 by David Anderson
November 14, 2009– Ron Poliquin, Republican candidate for the 31st District State Representative seat, received tremendous support from diverse segments of Delaware’s legal community during an Attorneys for Poliquin Fundraiser held at the Sugar Foot Restaurant in Wilmington on November 14, 2009.
Guests ranged from Timothy Houseal, former chairman of the Delaware Lawyers for Judicial Fairness and partner at Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor, Former Republican Attorney General candidate Ferris Wharton to leaders of the Delaware Trial Lawyers Association including DTLA President-Elect Jeffrey M. Gentilotti, DTLA Immediate Past President Vincent Bifferato, Jr., and former Dean of Students at Widener Law School Marion Newbold. Attached is an invitation listing the event’s host committee.
“Ron has been a defender of justice in both criminal and civil cases and he has pledged to take that spirit to Dover if he’s elected,” said attorney Michael Sensor, partner at Wilmington law firm Perry and Sensor
As an attorney, Ron successfully litigated a groundbreaking Taxpayer Rights lawsuit declaring over $200 million in taxpayer money held illegally by government officials. Poliquin also litigated a Taxpayers Rights case resulting in a $50,000.00 scholarship fund for high school students promoting open and honest government. Poliquin is an attorney with the law firm of Young, Malmberg & Howard, P.A. in Dover. His cases have been featured in publications such as USA Today, The Heartland Institute’s Budget and Tax News, and Delaware Law Weekly.

Big deal. Lawyers supporting lawyers. Did you expect anything else? When can we expect WWF to hold a fundraiser for him?
Earth to RSC357,
Ron Smith is a lawyer and has been one since 1979 when Poliquin was two (2) years old. Smith is also a former Levy Court Commissioner and Chair of the County GOP.
The reason this is a big deal is that the individuals that know Smith the most aren’t supporting him. These aren’t just lawyers, they’re the premier Republican attorneys in the State combined with the fact that the leadership of the DTLA is supporting Poliquin.
Perhaps Mr. Smith’s own arrogance is getting the best of him. Did you read his comment during his announcement, rather than talk about what he was for, he said Smith said he’s happy to have Wagner’s backing, and he thinks Poliquin is out of his league.
“I’m hoping that with the broad base of support we have, Ron will rethink running for the office,” he said. “Mr. Poliquin I don’t think will have that broad support.”
After reading the Dover Post article, are Wagner and Smith for real? Wagner says she doesn’t want to run because there is no state money to spend? Is this really what these guys are all about, spending state money? And she endorses Smith? And they both say you need someone with experience. Experience with what, spending state money??? If Smith hasn’t accomplished what he’s wanted to in over twenty years, don’t expect him to bring any real change.
Poliquin accomplished more for taxpayers in one case than Smith has done in his entire legislative career. What broad base of support is he speaking of? In 2006, he lost by over15 points as a twenty year incumbent!

I disagree. His opponent is a lawyer. It also strikes me as interesting that one of the lawyers has supported Democrats.
Should we say to the Smith committee that it is not a big deal because politicians are backing politicians? I think both men are getting impressive backing this early.
A local restaurant in Dover had to change its name because Ron Poliquin screwed up a simple sexual harassment case. One of the lawyers on that list, Felice Kerr supported Jack Markell for Governor. Kevin Howard is a long time Democratic operative and ran for State Rep as a Democrat. So you want Ron Poliquin as your State Rep?
What about issues Sam?
“So you want Ron Poliquin as your State Rep?”
I’d be honored to have him as my State Rep.
I missed something. Does the WWF have an interest in this race? A legal interest of some sort?
Mike Protack
In my world, being able to reach out to Democrats is a good thing when you do not compromise conservative core values. The district has a lot more Democrats than Republicans.
As for the WWF reference, it is the cool fact that RP did a stint in a semi-pro wrestling league.
I agree with Anon. I would be delighted as well to have Ron Poliquin as my State Rep. For that matter, Ron Smith would be a good one. I am happy to choose from such quality candidates. I am personally leaning to Poliquin at this time, it will be up to Mr. Smith to make a case as compelling as Mr. Poliquin did on two occassions. I will attend Mr. Smith’s announcement to give support. Maybe give a small donation to cover the food. He is an amazing asset. Few know the ins a and outs of legislative hall as well as he does. I have no doubt about his ability, intelligence, or experience. I want to find out where is heart is. Is it for the issues that affect most of the people?
A person with skills of Poliquin can learn the ropes in a year. I know that he is pretty close to the perspective that we need.
I will be interested to compare issues.
“The reason this is a big deal is that the individuals that know Smith the most aren’t supporting him. These aren’t just lawyers, they’re the premier Republican attorneys in the State combined with the fact that the leadership of the DTLA is supporting Poliquin.”
Average Joe I have checked out your contentions with attorneys that I know and your conclusion that Smith is not being supported by “the individuals that know Smith the most” is not supported by the facts as I have found them. I have asked around and found that for certain members of the host committee listed above that this will be the last such Poliquin event that they will be associated with. Evidently, they had agreed to be on the host committee some time ago long before Ron Smith announced. Out of a well placed sense of duty and obligation they followed thru on their commitment but they have no intention of being involved in or endorsing a candidate in a Republican Primary.
It is interesting to note that of those who agreed to serve on the Host Committee, a committee recruited prior to Mr. Smith’s, entry into the race, that all but 2 are from New Castle County and that those 2 are attorneys in the firm that Poliquin works for. In addition neither of these attorneys live in the 31st district. In fact if you search the list of the host Committee and Mr. Poliquin’s website you will find no Kent County attorney’s listed in any way as supporting Mr. Poliquin. Perhaps those who work day in, day out with Mr. Poliquin and “who know him the best” aren’t supporting him. In truth I don’t know that as I am not in that community. But one could certainly make the same conclusion from my aforementioned facts that you so blithely and inaccurately made in your comment.
I see from Mr. Poliquin’s website that there is one person from the 31st district endorsing Mr. Poliquin and that is our very own David Anderson. It appears as if the Republicans in Mr. Poliquin’s own district are not flocking to the campaign. Is this yet another case of those who know him best are rejecting the candidacy???
I have been informed that the list of supporters on Mr. Poliquin’s website has been shrinking and that some have asked to be removed from that site and the campaign has done so.
Last Average Joe, How do you quote Mr. Smith at his announcement when his announcement is tommorrow?
It seems you ability to gather facts is as faulty as your conclusions.
Average Joe, when I posted that, Smith wasn’t even a candidate yet. Some on that list are now wishing they hadn’t endorsed Poliquin. As is State Rep. King, and Sen. Booth. They have endorsed Poliquin, after Smith wrote most of Booths bills while they were in the House. You will now see King and Booth back off the poliquin bandwagon.

I had heard the same thing but I was not able to confirm it directly.
For the benefit of Cookie, of whom I hope I misunderstood, I really do think “Ron” takes this primary. I call it my “Stone-Cold-Lead-Pipe” lock! Bank it!
