HBO recently aired an outstanding documentary by British filmmaker Dan Reed, which examines the terrorist attacks in India’s largest city that occurred one year ago and claimed 170 lives.
The film “Terror in Mumbai” is available On Demand.
CNN reporter Fareed Zakaria hosts the documentary, which was assembled using victim interviews, a tape of the interrogation of the lone surviving terrorist, and security camera footage.
For those unfamiliar with the attacks, for 36 hours last November, a handful of Muslim terrorists struck 10 targets in Mumbai, including several large hotels, restaurants, a train station and a Jewish center.
The shocking images show what can happen when an unarmed society is confronted by evil men with rifles.
A handful of terrorists armed with Chinese Type-56 and AK-47s walk unmolested through hotel lobbies, train stations and crowded restaurants, throwing grenades and shooting nearly everyone they encounter, while Indian police armed only with First World War-vintage Lee-Enfield rifles cower outside.
How could this terrorist killing spree last for 36 hours?
No one was able to shoot back.
India prohibits private gun ownership. Their draconian gun ban dates back to British colonial rule.
Even Mahatma Gandhi – the father of passive resistance and non-violence – objected to the weapons ban.
“Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the act of depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest,” according to Gandhi’s “Autobiography” Part V, Chapter XXVII.
Zakaria announces that the terrorist group behind the attacks could replicate the tactics in an American city.
It could happen, but the outcome would be less catastrophic.
Unlike their Indian colleagues, American police are trained to march toward the sound of the guns when responding to an active shooter(s) scenario.
Here, armed citizens exercising their right to carry concealed weapons could have offered some resistance, if left with no other option, assuming the attack occurred in a jurisdiction where concealed carry is not prohibited.
This type of response was noted by the late firearms guru Col. Jeff Cooper.
“The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles,” ~ Jeff Cooper.
